The Association of Administrative and Professional Staff (AAPS) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) leads over 3,700 members in the multifaceted employment relationship, as the largest bargaining unit on campus. AAPS negotiates and advances the Association’s Agreement on Conditions and Terms of Employment (ACTE) ensuring UBC honours the resolved terms and conditions. AAPS advocates for its members with determination and drive, providing representation, advice and advocacy to its members who are all integral to the operations of UBC. The Executive Director, Association of Administrative and Professional Staff reports to the elected AAPS Board as the chief administrative officer and chief negotiator. Under the general direction of the Board President, the Executive Director manages the Association’s day-to-day operations and administration. Primary duties include, but are not limited to: providing strategic advice, labour relations, responding to member inquiries and complaints, managing and developing the office staff, budget preparation, research and writing.and driven by the opportunities and challenges that member service organizations face in a rapidly evolving and political environment. The Executive Director will draw on sophisticated and nuanced leadership skills to leverage AAPS’ recent accomplishments. The Executive Director will have innovative ideas to promote the strategic positioning of the Association in the interest of the membership in collaboration with the Board and staff while being committed to advocacy and transparency.
The ideal candidate will possess a graduate degree and have senior management experience in a complex stakeholder setting, preferably within post-secondary education (and/or related environment). S/he will have high-level leadership and communication abilities with experience reporting to and/or working with an executive board. S/he will have an extensive understanding of labour relations, negotiations, legal processes, policy development, finance, human resources and administrative operations, with a demonstrated ability to build partnerships and advance strategic initiatives.
