The Town of Qualicum Beach is seeking an enthusiastic individual to join the Town in a series of urban planning initiatives. Over the next year, the Town will be engaging the public on the second phase of our Waterfront Master Plan and planning for the comprehensive development of a strategic land consolidation in downtown Qualicum Beach. Reporting to the Director of Planning, the Special Projects Planner will play a key role in current projects, as well as supporting the Director of Planning on other planning department responsibilities. This position will deal with all land use and development functions including current and long range planning, development permits, bylaw amendments, and development applications. Work will also include participating in and facilitating community meetings, preparing reports on land use matters, and making public presentations as required. The successful candidate will possess an excellent understanding of urban planning principles, public engagement strategies, sustainability and environmental stewardship, project management and knowledge of municipal and provincial acts related to municipal planning and development approvals. The work requires strong analytical and problem solving skills, excellent communication skills (written and oral) and a demonstrated ability to bring out effective and creative responses to community planning matters. The successful candidate must be capable of working independently with limited supervision in a position requiring initiative, creativity, diplomacy and a positive attitude.
Qualifications:
A degree in Urban Planning or related discipline and/or 3 to 5 years previous experience in a municipal or other government setting
Membership or eligibility for membership in PIBC and/or the Canadian Institute of Planners
Valid Class 5 BC Driver’s license.
This position is subject to the CUPE Local 401 Collective Agreement. The wage, based on 35 hours per week, is $29.59 per hour. The regular hours of work are Monday to Friday, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm and summer hours 8:00 am – 4:00 pm (May 19 to September 4th).
This position is for a one-year term. The term may be extended as required to finish the current planning projects. This position will require flexible working hours, including evenings and weekends.
