School Program Developer – Halton Green Screens – Oakville, Ontario

The Opportunity:

Halton Green Screens recently launched a program to take Halton Green Screens into schools, where we offer theme-based and curriculum-based programming centred around a screening of an eco-film. Our main objective is to educate youth about environmental issues in a positive way that will encourage them to get outside and get involved. We want to inspire and empower, not dishearten.

As School Program Developer, the successful applicant will help expand and improve the schools program. Halton Green Screens works with multiple partner organizations in the environmental community, allowing the School Program Developer to make connections with other environmental groups.

Eligibility:

This position will be paid through a Canada Summer Jobs Grant. To be eligible, all applicants must:

be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;
have been registered as full-time students in the previous academic year and intend to return to school on a full-time basis in the next academic year;
be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act; and,
be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations.

In this position, you will:

Establish curriculum ties between environmental films and all streams of the K-12 Ontario curriculum.
Develop programming for curriculum streams that fit with their educational background.
Develop summer programming for children and youths (ages 4-12 years) at the Newcomer Information Centre in Oakville, in the priority area of Kerr Street.
Help deliver summer programming for children at the Newcomer Information Centre.
Ensure that programming is accessible to a diverse audience.
Ensure that programming is engaging and encourage children and youths to get outside and become involved in environmental initiatives.
Find opportunities for children and youths to be involved in their communities in a meaningful and ongoing fashion.
Make local connections with potential partners who can help deliver the programming in schools.
Assist with community outreach, and help identify under-served groups to whom events could/should be targeted.

Skills and qualifications:

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Strong organizational skills
Creativity and ability to design interesting, engaging environmental workshops
Must be enrolled in a degree program in a field related to any stream of the Ontario curriculum
Ability to work independently and as part of the team
Optional but desired: Teaching experience or a teaching degree
Optional but desired: Experience working with children or youths
Optional but desired: Experience working in the non-profit and/or environmental sectors
Optional but desired: Proficiency with Inkscape or other graphic design software
