Research Associate – University of Calgary

The University of Calgary is currently seeking a Full-Time Fixed-term Research Associate for the Department of Cell Biology & Anatomy in the Cumming School of Medicine. This Full-time Fixed Term position is for approximately 1 year (based on length of grant funding), with the possibility of extension.

Description
This position reports to the Principal investigator, and will work on a project dealing with calmodulin interactions with calcium channels.

Summary of Key Responsibilities (job functions include but are not limited to):
Measure FRET between expressed protein partners using skills in the areas of molecular biology and protein biochemistry, electrophysiology, and confocal microscopy
Create mutant calcium channel and calmodulin cDNAs for expression in tsA-201 cells or cultured hippocampal neurons
Perform coimmunoprecipitations between different interacting protein partners
Literature review, designing and conducting experiments
Analyzing protein biochemical Western blots and quantifying FRET image intensities and location within living cells
Some mentoring and training of others to achieve the goals of the research project(s) will be required
Attendance and presentation of results at annual national or international scientific meetings is expected

Qualifications / Requirements:
PhD and five years postdoctoral work on the molecular biology of calmodulin interactions with calcium channels, and in the area of T-type calcium channel and calmodulin interactions in brain neurons
5 years technical experience and completion of post-secondary education in related discipline
Established record of publishing in the field of calcium channel and calmodulin interactions
Requires skills in the operation of confocal microscopes, designing and preparing flourophore-tagged donor and acceptor pairs for FRET and quantifying results, and conducting current- or voltage-clamp electrophysiological recordings of calcium channel activity when expressed in tsA-201 cells or rodent cell cultures
Interact with other members of the team and undertake literature reviews
Ability to provide technical support for other team members through advice on technical lab issues
Operate and maintain complex technical equipment
A positive attitude and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are critical to success

WHMIS certification
