THE LOCATION:  The Sunshine Coast is a vibrant community of approximately 29,000, just a short 40-minute ferry ride from West Vancouver.  The Coast is known for its many outdoor activities and cultural events in addition to being just a short commute to all the amenities of a major urban centre.

THE POSITION:  
The Planning Division has an opening for a temporary full-time (up to 10 months to cover a maternity leave) Planner I position.  Under the day to day supervision of the Senior Planner, provides research, analyses, and draft reports and related services on provincial referrals, some land use planning permits and land administration processes for the Planning Division.

Candidates must have:

FORMAL EDUCATION AND TRAINING and EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor’s degree in planning or related discipline, ideally supplemented by specialist training in computer applications, graphics, GIS, and in land use planning courses.  Eligible for membership in the Planning Institute of BC is required.
• With a Bachelor’s Degree, a minimum four (4) years related experience in local government planning OR with a Master’s in Planning or a related field, a minimum of one (1) years’ experience in planning.

OTHER SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE

Proficiency in Microsoft office applications including word, excel, access and power point.
Basic competence with GIS applications including ArcMap and other ESRI products.
Ability to understand, calculate and analyse planning documents, maps, technical procedures, and government regulations.
Strong organizational skills, ability to perform time sensitive tasks & to deal with a series of ongoing tasks.
Ability to effectively present information and to respond to questions from staff, local or provincial government officials and the general public.
Good written and verbal communication skills and a proven ability to operate successfully in a team-oriented environment
Ability to understand and interpret planning statutes and bylaws.
Ability to prioritize workload and meet project deadlines.
Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a professional team.
Valid BC driver’s licence.
