Position: The Safety Advisor will provide support/guidance to our Atlantic Industrial Services division and will be based out of Dartmouth with travel to various facilities and customer locations across Nova Scotia. The Safety Advisor will report directly to HSEQ Regional Manager and indirectly to the operations management team. A primary focus for the Safety Advisor will be conducting facility/jobsite inspections and behavior-based observations in the field.
Additional responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
Monitor safety performance (leading and lagging indicators) against internal standards;
Provide and/or coordinate employee training courses as needed and maintain employee training records;
Maintain knowledge of applicable federal/provincial/municipal legislation;
Promote continuous improvement through implementation of corporate safety policies, practices and procedures;
Lead by demonstrating required behaviours and attitudes to establish a strong culture;
Assist operations with developing project safety plans, job safety analysis, standard operating procedures, etc.;
Assist operations with scheduling and documenting monthly safety meetings;
Assist Supervisors with incident investigations to ensure that root causes are identified and corrective actions are implemented;
Identify external reporting requirements (i.e. WCB reporting, etc.) and prepare the necessary letters/reports for management signature;
Support management with timely disability management and a safe return-to-work approach;
Act as a liaison with customer safety representatives and government officials;
Attend monthly joint health and safety committee meetings as an advisor;
Assist operations with orientations (safety portion) for new employees; and
Review and maintain various safety records.
Qualifications:
Post secondary education in a health, safety or environment discipline;
3 to 5 years health, safety and environment experience in an industrial setting;
Professional designation (CHSC, CSS, NCSO, etc.);
Workers’ compensation claims management experience;
Proficient computer skills (MS Office, etc.);
Strong communication skills (written, verbal and listening);
Strong interpersonal skills;
Ability to motivate others;
Self starter with minimal supervision; and
Highly developed time management skills.
