Project Description:
GBP Consulting, a Vancouver-based environmental consulting firm, is working with Cidade Precisa de Você (CPV), a Brazilian NGO dedicated to developing and re-habilitating community and public spaces. CPV was recently awarded a grant from the Brazil Foundation to implement several interventions to increase the community members’ engagement with a local park, Jardim Damasceno, in São Paulo, Brazil. GBP Consulting (in co-operation with CPV) has been tasked with designing and implementing improvements to the urban landscape in Jardim Damasceno.
GBP Consulting is currently seeking two (2) Urban Agriculture & Green Infrastructure Interns who will support GBP Consulting’s Director and Project Manager in the research, development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the urban agricultural and green infrastructure component of the project (i.e., urban farming, green infrastructure, rainwater management, and planting of trees and vegetation).
Duties and Responsibilities:
Review environmental plans and laws for the area, as well as propose interventions, ensuring they are in line with said laws and regulations
Assess natural conditions and assist in the coordination and supervision of site preparation projects
Provide direction on lifecycle asset management for green infrastructure
Coordinate efforts with other team members
Provide direction on design and conduct construction field inspections
Physical work such as: hand tilling, planting seeds, harvesting, pitchforking manure, moving soil and rocks, hand drilling, light carpentry, weeding, mulching, watering.
Assist in workshop curriculum development and delivery
Develop project monitoring reports
The ideal candidate has:
A working knowledge and experience in the application of urban agriculture, green infrastructure construction and rainwater management system practices and techniques
Experience in the area of monitoring, evaluation, research and learning (MERL) to support M&E activities
Strong research, evaluation, data analysis and writing skills
Strong leadership, communication and collaboration skills
Good organization skills and ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
Highly adaptable based on project need, self-directed & able to multitask
Experience in project report production and delivery
Experience in delivering adult and youth training and education
A love of plants and nature
Experience in sustainable agricultural practices
Previous building and construction experience
Experience with hand tools
Physically fit and capable of lifting 50 lbs
Willingness to get their hands dirty
Willingness to travel and work in low-income areas
Ability to speak Brazilian Portuguese is an asset
Education:
Degree or diploma in the following disciplines: land & food systems, agriculture, natural resource management, permaculture, forestry, biology, environmental science, civil engineering, water resource engineering, environmental engineering or other related subject. (Other degrees may be considered if skillset deemed acceptable)
Additional Requirements:
30 years of age or younger
A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee status in Canada
Legally entitled to work in Canada (and not on a work or study visa)
Have recently (within two years prior to the start of the internship) completed post-secondary studies
Not currently in receipt of Employment Insurance
Underemployed (meaning you are employed below your level of education and/or hold part-time employments)
Able to provide proof of sufficient funds to cover personal expenses while living abroad
Internship location: Canada (work remotely part-time during pre- and post-internship posting for 7 weeks) & São Paulo, Brazil (3 days a week, for 13 weeks)
Internship duration:
Mid-July to end of December 2019
Pay: Flight, accommodations, local travel (project-related only) and cell phone credit will be paid for. Additionally, interns will receive a small monthly stipend during the Brazil portion of the internship. However, interns will be required to pay for their own food, medical insurance and incidentals. They will be required to prove that they have sufficient funds to cover these expenses while abroad.
