This position will assist Operations Management Services staff with the maintenance and monitoring of the phytoremediation treatment works at the Salmon Arm Landfill. Phyotoremediation is an innovative approach to managing landfill leachate, whereby treated leachate is distributed through a specialized irrigation system to a hybrid poplar tree plantation. The duties will include managing the poplar tree plantation, maintaining the irrigation system and preparing an end term report documenting tree growth rates, irrigation rates and leachate uptake.
This position will also assist the Operations Management Services staff in:
Conducting refuse audits and providing the public with information on ways to reduce waste;
Interact with the public and commercial waste haulers to promote CSRD waste reduction initiatives;
Manage the poplar tree plantation and the irrigation system;
Prepare an end term report documenting tree growth rates, irrigation rates and leachate uptake.
Qualifications:
Candidates for these positions must:
be enrolled in an accredited post secondary institution (full-time or part-time) in a discipline relevant to the position;
be returning to school (full-time or part-time) at the end of the period of employment;
have the ability to work independently;
have strong interpersonal skills;
enjoy working outdoors;
hold a valid Drivers License.
This position is from early May to late August 2015, with hours of work being Monday to Friday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and is subject to the provisions of the Collective Agreement negotiated between the CSRD and CUPE Local 1908.
