Our Community Bike Club is a project of PEDAL and Our Community Bikes! Our Community Bikes is a not for profit cooperatively-run community bike shop. We promote cycling in Vancouver by providing space, help, and tools so that people can learn how to fix and maintain their own bicycles. We also recycle donated bikes and parts and run programs to distribute bikes among people who face financial, mental, or physical barriers to cycling. The shop is a DIY education center which strives to empower ALL the folks who access the space.
During the school year, we run after school bike clubs in neighbouring high schools and elementary schools. Our primary goal is to introduce kids to a fun, safe, healthy way to get around Vancouver. But we are more than just a riding club! Through our clubs and camp, we focus on empowering youth, leadership, environmental awareness and cycling advocacy!
This summer, we will be running our fifth season of Summer Bike Camps. We are seeking one post-secondary student who is as enthusiastic about cycling as they are about empowering youth.. We are looking for folks who have experience as educators and an understanding of their bikes and basic mechanics.
This job has been made possible through a Canada Summer Jobs grant so certain hiring conditions apply. We need you to have been a full-time student last semester, and planning on returning to school in the fall. We can only offer the job to applicants who are between the ages of 18 and 30.
OCBC Summer Camp Coordinator & Camp Instructor
Who: A current full-time student between the age of 18 and 30, who is planning on returning to school in the fall
What: 12.00$/hour, 32 hours/week, 14 weeks total (mid-May to mid-August). You will have the option to work remotely from time to time. Most full time employees work Monday to Thursday from 9:00am to 5:00pm, however the schedule is flexible.
Where: Vancouver, BC (our bike shop is on Main St., while most of our Bike Camps operate out of Britannia Community Services Centre on Commercial Drive)
When: Mid-May to mid-August (exact start and end dates are flexible)
Skills we’re looking for:

Overall Job Description:
The OCBC Summer Camp Coordinator will be expected to work with the OCBC Program Coordinator and OCBC staff to plan, organize, promote and carry out the OCBC Summer Bike Camps. The Summer Camp Coordinator must be able to work autonomously and in an ever-changing work environment. We hope to find a candidate who is a self-starter and who is excited about cycling education and having fun with kids in Vancouver! The Camp Coordinator will be in charge of daily camp activities, activity reports, and communications. They will be the main contact person for parents and community partners, and will promote the camp to schools and the public. The Camp Coordinator may also help with volunteer recruitment and other tasks as needed.
As this is a Canada Summer Jobs posting, we are obligated ot ensure that the minimum number of work hours are completed. If a week of camp is cancelled due to poor weather or low-enrolment, we will find ways to ensure that hours are completed. This means you may be able to help with other program tasks, or with mechanic work at our Bike shop on Main St! This is a flexible position, and excellent for a young person looking to improve their logistics and coordination skills, curriculum development and planning skills and to gain experience with youth, education and community development.

The In-city Bike Camps (ages 9-13) are summer camps that develops bike handling and navigational skills.
The Earn-A-Bike Camp (ages 14-18) is a condensed version of our E.A.B. Club but with more room for day-to-day continuity and skill building.
Our tentative camp schedule is as follows:
Camp 1: Monday July 6th to Friday July 10th
Camp 2 and 3: Monday July 13th to Friday July 17th
Camp 3 and 4: Monday July 20th to Friday July 24th
Camp 5: Monday July 27th to Friday July 31st
Camp 6: Tuesday August 4th to Saturday August 8th (Earn-A-Bike Camp)
