Education
Post-secondary degree or diploma preferably in Insurance/Risk Management or a related field or relevant related experience.
Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP) designation, or working towards to obtaining it.
Canadian Risk Manager (CRM) designation considered an asset.
Member of the Insurance Institute of Canada.
Experience
Minimum seven years’ insurance company experience examining Property and Liability Claims (including errors and omissions).
Substantial experience interpreting insurance coverage policy language.
Experience in negotiating claims.
Direct experience with customers, delivering risk management and/or insurance services.
Knowledge of municipal reciprocal insurance exchanges.
An excellent working knowledge of commercial insurance products including Property, Casualty, Auto, Boiler & Machinery, etc.
Thorough knowledge of the claims adjustment process and the claims examination process including investigation requirements and equitable settlements.
Knowledge of the Alberta Municipal Government Act.
Experience in an office environment using computerized information systems.

Responsibilities
Examine large Property claims which may include designated historical buildings, application of building bylaws, mobile equipment, business interruption and, course of construction claims.
Examine complicated Commercial General Liability (CGL) claims which may include bodily injury, and property damage. The examination of CGL claims may include Personal Injury and Advertising Injury such as false arrest, malicious prosecution, wrong detention or imprisonment, invasion of privacy, libel, slander, and defamation of character.
Confirm the nature and validity of new claims, including determination of potential exposures and assigning appropriate independent adjusters or legal counsel.
Monitor the claims process from the initial report through final settlement, locating and mitigating problem areas, and providing recommendations on risk mitigation techniques to avoid similar losses.
Ensure customers receive timely and accurate responses to enquiries regarding the status of their claims through a variety of communications channels.
Maintain effective customer service, ensuring that all communications are handled with the utmost of professionalism.
Review payment requests thoroughly and recommend payments for processing.
Assist in mentoring staff.
Meet with members on claims issues as required.
Perform analysis of loss trends or unusual claims to identify trends and opportunities for mitigating and managing risks.
Support development and delivery of risk management training and risk programs to members.
Assist in special projects as required.
Develop a sound knowledge of the Municipal Government Act and the liability defenses it offers municipalities.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Conditions
This position requires some travel, largely within the province, some of which is overnight. This is largely scheduled and known well in advance.
