The Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) is the international fisheries management organization responsible for the management of the Northwest Atlantic fishery in international waters. Working with the Scientific Council Coordinator, he/she is the main Scientific Council (SC) administrative support and plays an important role in the organization and support of SC meetings, local and non-local (including overseas). The NAFO Scientific Information Administrator is also responsible for the dissemination of information on NAFO, the Secretariat’s first contact for the media as well as for the public and organizations seeking general information on NAFO.
The successful candidate will have a high degree of professionalism, strong organizational skills, as well as the confidence and excellent communications skills regarding communication with individuals from different nations. The key responsibilities of the Scientific Information Administrator include, but are not limited to:
Providing administrative support to the SC
Coordination of the Secretariat’s public relations, including assistance with the drafting of press releases on meeting results, development of communication and public relations strategies and management of NAFO’s social media presence;
Compilation and dissemination of information on NAFO;
Management of the virtual meeting space, e.g. the WebEx and SharePoint;
Routine administration and correspondence.
Core requirements for the position are:
University degree
Background or knowledge relevant for an international fisheries body (e.g. languages, work experience abroad, familiarity with fisheries matters, etc) would be an asset
Expertise in public relations and/or communications
Proficiency in MS Office (particularly MS Word) as well as experience managing Microsoft SharePoint software
Familiarity with updating of website content would be considered an asset
Excellent judgement, diplomacy and discretion in handling confidential and/or sensitive materials
Familiarity with and willingness to work under a teamwork approach
Capability of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds
Ability to travel nationally and internationally for meetings
The annual starting salary will depend upon qualifications and experience.
