Safety Advisor – City of Cold Lake

Job Description:
The City of Cold Lake is seeking a qualified individual to fill the permanent, full-time position of Safety Advisor with the Department of Corporate Services.

Reporting to the Human Resources Manager, the Safety Advisor is responsible for providing a wide variety of service levels within the Human Resources department by conducting research, completing projects, & providing support concerning labour relations and safety issues to all staff members. The position is also responsible for updating the safety program to adhere to changing legislation in order to maintain COR; this includes mentoring and training staff members in conducting investigations and monitoring trends related to safety incidents. The Safety Advisor responds to all employee and contractor inquiries regarding safety issues for the City in a fair, consistent, professional, and timely manner. This position will also be responsible for interpretation and monitoring of the collective agreement rules and regulations related to human resources and safety legislation. The Safety Advisor will maintain all additions, updates, and changes to the City of Cold Lake’s Occupational Health & Safety program reports for management review. The incumbent must be able to deal with confidential and or sensitive information including information related to labour relations.

The preferred qualifications for this position include National Construction Safety Officer (NCSO) certification, along with comprehensive knowledge of Alberta Safety Legislation, AMHSA Safety System Management and audit tools, as well as Joint Health and Safety Committee experience. The preferred candidate will have strong computer and organizational skills, effective problem solving skills, the ability to deal with confidential and sensitive information in a professional manner, and the ability to prioritize multiple projects with tight deadlines. Preference will be given to candidates with five years’ experience in a comparable role, preferably in a Municipal Government setting.
