Position Overview
Playing a key leadership role within FBC, the Regional Manager leads the implementation, administration and ongoing development of sustainability-supporting initiatives in the Greater Vancouver – Sea to Sky Region, which includes Metro Vancouver and the western part of the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District. The Regional Manager is also responsible for overseeing the province-wide Salmon-Safe BC eco-certification program for urban redevelopment and agricultural operations. This position is based in our Vancouver office and delivered through a hybrid working arrangement (home and office). From time to time and subject to resources and priorities, the Regional Manager may have opportunities to support initiatives in other regions. As a member of the FBC Management Team, the GVSS Regional Manager works collaboratively with colleagues to contribute to the ongoing success of the organization in a manner consistent with the Charter for Sustainability, Strategic Plan and Annual Operating Plans.
Essential Job Functions and Duties
The Regional Manager helps to advance FBC’s sustainability vision – social well-being supported by a vibrant economy and sustained by a healthy environment – by managing existing programs and by developing new programs and projects that meaningfully contribute to the advancement of sustainability in the GVSS region and across BC, including the Salmon-Safe BC program.
Duties related to existing programs and projects are as follows:
Developing and managing existing program/project budgets and Annual Operating Plans for the GVSS Region and Salmon-Safe BC program
Enhancing program and project collaboration by designing, promoting, convening and impartially facilitating meetings, workshops, webinars and other events that typically involve a broad diversity of governments, private sector entities, not-for-profit organizations and other interests
As required, impartially facilitating resolution of interjurisdictional and other conflicts that may arise through the course of program and project delivery
Ensuring effective program and project delivery through the recruitment and management of staff, contractors and volunteers as appropriate, for example:
Coordinating hiring processes
Completing annual performance reviews for direct reports and providing ongoing feedback
Facilitating project/program team meetings to track progress
Ensuring that deliverables are achieved on schedule and within budget
Ensuring healthy work/life balance by monitoring and adjusting staff workloads, priorities and resources as appropriate
Identifying funding sources, developing proposals and securing funding for the delivery and administration of existing programs and projects
Providing timely reports to funders
The Regional Manager has these additional duties:
Raising awareness of FBC, its mandate and activities among key target audiences in the GVSS region and beyond, including those in government, the private sector and civil society
Maintaining a current understanding of key sustainability issues and opportunities in the region that are relevant to FBC’s mandate and strategic priorities and that may benefit from FBC’s services and collaborative model
Maintaining and building on positive relationships with elected and staff representatives of government (local, First Nations, provincial and federal) as well as representatives of private sector and non-government entities in the region that may benefit from and/or support FBC’s sustainability initiatives
Identifying, scoping and securing funding for new sustainability-supporting initiatives
Facilitating connections and collaboration among organizations and interests that are pursuing common sustainability-related goals in the region and beyond
Supporting internal organization-wide planning, reporting and teamwork through activities such as:
Providing briefing notes to the FBC Board of Directors as well as Task and Standing Committees of the Board as appropriate
Participating in and providing updates at staff and manager meetings
Providing regular reports on project goals, timelines, budgets and resource needs to management.
Required Skills and Qualifications
Knowledge and understanding of the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainability issues, policies and practices
Demonstrated successful experience in facilitating multi-interest collaboration on sustainability-related topics
Significant experience in multi-interest engagement process design that uses a range of engagement approaches
Familiarity with consensus-based and other forms of collaborative decision-making
Significant experience managing complex projects and working with multi-disciplinary and / or interjurisdictional teams, including in the public, private and not-for-profit sectors
Degree in urban planning, natural resource management, environmental management or an equivalent combination of education and training and/or at least three years of relevant work experience
Strong knowledge of land use planning challenges and opportunities in BC at different scales and contexts (e.g., rural, urban, traditional territories and regions)
Significant understanding of, and experience working with, Indigenous communities/Nations along with demonstrated ability to facilitate meetings involving Indigenous people in culturally appropriate ways
Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trust-based relationships with staff and elected officials within the four orders of government, private sector and civil society
Experience tracking and managing budgets, leading the development of funding proposals and securing funding
Experience working with both urban and rural remote communities
Strong interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
Strong time management skills
Willingness to be flexible as organizational and regional priorities evolve
Willingness to travel within BC and to work occasional evenings and/or weekends
As an asset, having existing relationships with representatives of all orders of government, not-for-profit organizations and private sector entities (corporations, industry associations)
