Program Leader (Children’s Programs) – City of White Rock – White Rock, BC

The City of White Rock is a unique, ocean-side community of 20,000 citizens known for its sunny weather, expansive beach, historic pier, delightful restaurants, and sense of community. The City is located half an hour south of Vancouver on the shore of Semiahmoo Bay.

The Recreation and Culture Department seeks two creative and organized students to supplement their regular staff during the summer months. Responsibilities include assisting a Recreation Programmer in planning, scheduling, implementing, and leading a 6-week summer day camp program for 6-9 year-olds and a 3-day leadership training program for summer day camp volunteers. They will also assist in promoting interest and participation in program activities through various media and community groups. Tasks will broaden both experience and knowledge in planning, organization, and interpersonal skills related to programs for children and youth in a social and recreational setting. Evening and weekend work may be required.

Necessary skills and qualifications include:

Completion of Grade 12 and some related experience preferably in municipal recreational work, some supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience;
Consideration for preferred studies in the areas of recreation, leisure, education or in related disciplines.
High Five Certification including The Principles of Healthy Child Development;
Must successfully pass a criminal record check;
Current first aid and Bronze Cross certifications by appointment’s start date;
Possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC driver’s license or equivalent (Class 4 is preferred) with an acceptable driving record by appointment’s start date (please visit www.icbc.com for criteria regarding licensing).

Grant funding has been applied for and should it be received, candidates must meet the following criteria and preference will be given to students with priority status:

Registered as a full-time student in the previous academic year with the intention to return to school on a full-time basis the next academic year;
Aged 15 and 30 years of age at start of employment;
Legally entitled to work according to relevant provincial/territorial legislation and regulations, and;
Confirmed Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or has refugee protection under the relevant Act.

The hourly wage of this appointment is $20.21 and the expected duration is approximately nine (9) weeks, beginning in mid-June 2015. For the first 2 – 3 weeks, hours worked will be up to 30 hours / week; the remaining 7 weeks will be up to 40 hours / week.
