Have you ever thought you would like to run an organic vegetable garden?
This could be a business opportunity for the season of 2015 with the option to lease the organic garden for years to come. Or, it could be a contract position for 7 1/2 months (April 1 to October 15).
The organic garden is close to 2 acres. We do a Farmers’ Market (Collingwood) on Saturday morning and supply vegetables and eggs to about 55 customers (CSA weekly share program.) Besides vegetables, we traditionally have had 4 pigs, and 300 meat chickens over the season, and 7 dozen egg layers.
Accomodation is provided for two people in a separate new building which has a bedroom with two single beds and a bathroom but the workers will be responsible for their own meals which can be made in the adjacent commercial kitchen. This is where the vegetables are prepared for sale. Preserves can be made and cooking classes taught.
Two people with occasional help and a co-op student can run this operation. If the applicant decides to run the farm, he/she will be expected to make decisions, and pay the bills. In return, he/she will assume the income. Expected income is about $15,000 net for 5 months. It is possible to contract with occasional workers through the Wwoofer program.
The successful applicant will be encouraged to adopt efficient farming methods as outlined in the book, ‘The Market Gardener’ by Jean-Martin Fortier.
