Marine Fishing Gear Technician
This position will work with the CWF Fisheries Engagement Specialist and commercial fish harvesters to test the suitability of ropeless fishing gear for commercial fisheries.
This will require travel throughout the Maritimes and full-days at sea working on fishing vessels in all conditions. Other than fieldwork, this position will be based in the Halifax area to assist in gear preparation, though office work is expected to occur at the residence of the selected candidate and will involve online interaction.
This is a full-time term position expected to begin in July 2020 and last 5 or 6 months, but this is dependent on fishing seasons and public health restrictions. Regular office hours may not be the standard work-period during fieldwork.

Objectives:
Learn about and become familiar with ropeless gear technologies and how they operate.
Train fishers in ropeless fishing gear systems.
Work in with fishers to measure the effectiveness of ropeless systems using an existing series of tests.
Assist with the use of the systems during at-sea trials.
Measure and collect data during at-sea trials.
Keep complete, organized notes and records.
Produce a report of quantitative gear evaluations.
Collaborate with other individuals and organizations conducting ropeless fishing gear trials to align protocols and data collected.

Required Qualifications:
Strong inter-personal skills.
Capable and self-directed.
A working knowledge of Atlantic Canadian fixed gear fisheries.
Strong communication skills.
Capability to carry out active field work though challenging physical conditions.
Ability to lift and carry up to 50lbs

Assets:
A college diploma or university degree on a topic related to fisheries, conservation, or ocean technology
Experience in commercial fishing
French language skills
Marine Emergency Duties (MED) training
Marine First Aid

Conditions of Service:
Period of Employment: 5-6 month contract, full-time.
Travel: This position requires frequent travel throughout the Maritimes and full days spent on fishing vessels.
Anticipated Start Date: July 2020 *contingent on public health restrictions
Valid driver’s license is required.
Location: Halifax, NS
