Manager, Sustainability – Alectra Utilities- Ontario

Position Purpose:
The Manager, Sustainability supports the vision to position Alectra as a sustainability leader in the industry and the communities served. The Manager delivers a comprehensive and strategic sustainability program ensuring all elements of people, planet and performance are central to how Alectra will mature as a company. This position will monitor and assess sustainability within the utility sector and board industry context via industry literature, conferences, committee participation as well as through direct relationship-building. The incumbent will also identify emerging sustainability opportunities and risks as they apply to our businesses, as well as develop associated mitigation measures and tactical plans. This role will develop and maintain effective relationships, directly or indirectly with utility staff, their boards and their shareholders, primarily but not limited to sustainability

Responsibilities:
Manages the cross-functional process of sustainability strategy formulation with the Strategy, Enterprise Risk and Sustainability (SES) team and the process of sustainability strategy implementation throughout the utility
Advance Alectra’s sustainability leadership brand
Identifies target organizations / opportunities to support the sustainability direction with Alectra.
Identifies emerging sustainability business threats and assists in the development of risk mitigation strategies to protect the company’s business interests
Implements and manages the sustainability framework including development, tracking, and reporting of KPIs
Continuously seeks to enhance the strategic and operational effectiveness of the sustainability program and associated initiatives
Seeks additional opportunities to grow the utility through sustainability initiatives externally
Creates communication content including the annual sustainability report
Manages internal cross functional Sustainability Committee or equivalent
Develops, monitors and improves waste diversion programs
Manages GHG inventory and drive mitigation efforts
Conducts stakeholder engagement, materiality assessments and gap analyses to refine sustainability strategy
Participates in industry committees, panels, conferences and other events to track, assess, monitor and report on sustainability issues
Provides input to annual business plans and budgets and manages resources accordingly
Manages department projects and key initiatives to ensure quality and timely completion within budget
Researches, recommends and implements new or enhanced policies, procedures and processes to continuously improve operational effectiveness
Ensures compliance to legislative, regulatory and Health & Safety policies, procedures and standards
Performs other duties as assigned

Education & Specialized Knowledge:
Bachelors or Masters’ Degree in environment or sustainability discipline or recognized equivalent or related experience
Knowledge of environmental, social and governance issues combined with excellent ability to interpret these issues for Alectra’s business environment
Knowledge of related Federal and Provincial regulations and standards
Proficiency with MS Office applications
Familiar with GHG accounting
General knowledge of the energy and utility industries, would be an asset
Proficiency with MS Office applications and financial systems

Experience:
Experience in strategy design as well as developing proposals and submissions
Demonstrated results from implementing effective sustainability initiatives
Experience in developing annual sustainability reports
Experience meeting sustainability KPIs through employee engagement, innovative communication methods, and consensus building with employees at all levels of the corporation
Strong experience in project management
Experience in a unionized electrical distribution utility environment an asset
Experience developing and implementing a comprehensive corporate sustainability program

Excellent analytical and planning skills, with the ability to assess the impact of complex decisions
Strong written, oral and presentation skills, with the ability to organize and convey information in a compelling way
Ability to plan, prioritize and execute multiple projects and initiatives within established timelines
Strong conflict negotiation skills, with the ability to influence and resolve difficult situations
Excellent research and analytical skills. Strong ability to assimilate complex sustainability issues and distill into succinct points that are relevant to the organization.
Demonstrated strength in project management
Demonstrated collaboration and relationship building skills
Must hold and maintain a valid class “G” driver’s license
