Manager of Planning – Regional District of Mount Waddington – Port McNeill, BC

The Regional District of Mount Waddington (RDMW), with a population of 12,000, encompasses an area of 20,720 square kilometers which includes the north end of Vancouver Island, a portion of the mainland and numerous islands in Queen Charlotte Strait. The RDMW is divided into four electoral areas, includes eight unincorporated communities and is home to four municipalities and a number of First
Nations’ settlements.

The RDMW is seeking an individual with well-rounded experience in the field of planning that is able to deal with all facets of the RDMW’s planning needs. The ideal candidate would:

possess a university degree in a planning or related discipline;
have professional planning experience, preferably at the local government level, some or all of which has been in a regional district setting;
be eligible for membership in the Planning Institute of British Columbia / Canadian Institute of Planners;
have a thorough understanding of the legislation guiding planning and development in the Province of British Columbia;
have an in-depth grasp of community planning principles, practices, techniques and methods;
proven ability to work independently;
be able and willing to provide a high level of customer service; and,
possess a valid Class 5 driver’s licence.

The Manager of Planning is responsible for administering and amending the Regional Plan and thirteen official community plans/zoning bylaws. In addition, the Manager of Planning undertakes the processing of various planning related applications including subdivision applications referred to the RDMW by the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, and referrals from the Province associated with applications requesting the use of Crown lands. Administering a building permitting service, undertaking direct bylaw enforcement and keeping the geographic information system up-to-date are also responsibilities associated with this position. The Manager of Planning is also responsible for liaising with five advisory planning commissions that are consulted as part of processing of planning matters in their respective areas.
