Maintenance Manager – Connors Bros Ltd – Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick

Connors Bros. is the largest sardine processing operation in the world!

We are currently seeking a Maintenance Manager for food processing and canning facility.

Overall Purpose:
As part of the onsite Leadership Team reporting to the Operations General Manager, this role is responsible to provide ongoing leadership and direction to the Maintenance Supervisors, Chief Engineer, the Department’s Clerical and Admin staff and the hourly Maintenance team.

The plant is located in Blacks Harbour, New Brunswick and operates 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, with a very short maintenance window.  The incumbent will oversee the operation of the Maintenance and Electrical departments, the Power House, the Refrigeration Plant, a portion of the Municipal Water System and address mechanical problems with the Waste Water Treatment Plant, to ensure reliability of plant and equipment operation, while optimizing maintenance and operation costs.

Job Duties:

Continuously improve manufacturing processes in terms of quality and performance measurements, and identifying and eliminating bottleneck areas;
Design, document, troubleshoot and lead the launch of new products and processes from an engineering perspective;
Identify and solve safety concerns encountered during design and study of manufacturing processes;
Devise “hands on” improvement processes to reduce scrap and defects, while improving throughput and document SOPs and the implementation of Best Practices into the facility. Coordinate the installation of new equipment to maximize production efficiency and maintainability;
Work with production to make modifications to equipment and work areas for maximum efficiency of operation;
Maintain a knowledge base in the capacity of existing utilities and the current level of utilization;
Stay abreast of the latest safety, environmental and other regulations which affect the facility to ensure compliance;
Ensure that Systems are in place & followed to maintain reliability of the equipment & processes;
Keep written documentation current in support of Environmental, Worker Safety and Food Safety compliance;
Periodically prepare reports to satisfy environmental and safety regulations and ensure a safe and professional work environment;
Adhere to all health and safety policies/procedures, Good Manufacturing Practices (GMPs) and wear the required personal protective equipment (PPE) while in the warehouse or production areas (including but not limited to hairnets/beard nets, safety glasses, hearing protection, steel toe boots and seatbelts while operating forklifts).

Required Qualifications:

Post-Secondary Training in Thermodynamics & Food Processing Equipment, Canning Processes, Refrigeration and Food Science ;
10+ years leadership, supervisory or management experience in a fast paced food/beverage manufacturing (preferably with canning), packaging and distribution environment;
10+ years of mechanical maintenance experience;
10+ years of ammonia refrigeration experience with plate and blast freezers;
5 – 10 years of leadership, supervisory or management experience with Boiler Rooms, Steam Generators
10+ years with high pressure steam and retorts
10+ years’ experience in the fish canning industry, preferably with a strong network of acquaintances with foreign machine manufacturers and plant operators;
Certification to operate a retort is preferred
Experience with public water supply and distribution systems
Must have excellent communication skills and the ability to develop a team environment promoting talent growth and mutual assistance;
Must have experience managing a team of multi- disciplined trade professionals employed in multiple locations serving a 7/24 operation;
Experience managing multi-million dollar capital projects and multiple projects simultaneously and the ability to review reports and statistics to plan effective maintenance initiatives;
Working knowledge of processing equipment, material handling, and plant/facility operation systems;
Experience with computerized maintenance programs with strong PC skills -MS Office applications;
Proven understanding and experience with financial processes including budgeting;
Leads with a Sense of Urgency, Customer Service, Excellence and Pride, in a Team environment.

Salary range is $75,000 – $105,000 annually.
The successful candidate will be paid in accordance with their experience, skill and knowledge
