Labourer – Streets – City of New Westminster

We are seeking two hard-working and dedicated individuals to fill Labourer vacancies within the Streets & Sidewalks Branch in the Engineering Operations Department. Reporting to a Subforeperson, you will perform general labour and assist the crews in the construction, repair and maintenance of streets, roadways, sidewalks, curbs, steps, retaining walls, stairs, gutters and related facilities. Some of your related duties will include: shovelling and raking asphalt mixtures and other materials; assisting in cutting and setting forms; assisting in placing and screeding concrete; and using a variety of tools and equipment including jackhammers, plate tampers, screed machines, concrete grinders, asphalt rollers, road saws and other related tools and small equipment. When operationally required, you may also work in other sections including Water, Solid Waste & Recycling and Sewers & Drainage.

Requirements:
Grade 12 graduation, supplemented by related experience in asphalt and/or concrete work and construction, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
Demonstrated experience in the methods, materials, tools and equipment used in asphalt paving and patching operations, concrete work and maintenance and construction projects.
Ability to assist in formsetting and concrete finishing duties.
Ability to assist in finishing asphalt surfaces to prescribed grade and length.
Ability to understand and work from line and grade markers and instructions.
Knowledge of and ability to follow safety regulations required in the work.
Ability to effectively perform tasks with minimal supervision.
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.
Ability to maintain effective working relationships within a team environment.
Ability to work effectively and courteously with other City departments and a variety of external contacts.
Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
Physical aptitude to perform manual labour and to work in all weather conditions.
Must possess and maintain a valid Class 5 BC Driver’s License; however, preference will be given to applicants with a valid Class 3 BC Driver’s License with Air Brake Endorsement, backhoe certification and/mid-size to large equipment experience.
The successful candidate will be required to pass and maintain a clear Police Information Check.
