Rio Tinto is one of the largest metal and mining companies in the world with a market cap of over $50 billion and over 50,000 employees across six continents. Despite challenging market conditions, Rio Tinto remains one of the preeminent companies in the world with a very strong balance sheet, an exceptional management team, a diversified product mix and operations, and a drive to become one of the most sustainable companies in the sector.
Located in beautiful north coastal BC, Rio Tinto’s Kitimat facility has, over its 60 year history, been a highly successful operation and a key employer in the region with over 1,000 staff. This is an exciting time for the Kitimat operations. The plant has recently gone through a major, $5 billion modernization with the goal of creating the most technologically advanced, energy–efficient, cost-competitive smelters in the world. The project was one of the largest private construction projects in British Columbia’s history and has increased production capacity by 48% to over 420,000 tonnes a year and reduced emission by nearly 50%, including approximately 500,000 tons of greenhouse gas annually.
With this investment and a restructuring of the HR delivery model, an opportunity has been created for a new HRBP to join this exciting operation. Under the new model, the HRBP will be a true business partner, a key member of the management team and focused on enabling management and developing strategy, forecasting, analysing and planning. While the HRBP will oversee another business partner and provide input and assist in labour relations, recruitment, performance management and compensation these services will be delivered by People Services and Areas of Expertise in the Rio Tinto HR model.
The ideal candidate will be a business-minded, HR leader who has experience in a large, complex, unionized, industrial organization and ideally in a matrix environment, where they have needed to be an influencer. He/she will be a strong change leader, strategic thinker and possess exceptional analytical skills. The HRBP will enjoy operating at a strategic level but remaining closely connected to the operations as well as working across a global organization.
This is an exciting opportunity to take on a change mandate in a blue-chip organization where a successful candidate will have tremendous opportunities for further career growth.
