Habitat Program Manager – Canadian Wildlife Federation – Ontario

Summary of Main Responsibilities:
Working directly under the Canadian Wildlife Federation’s (CWF) Senior Conservation Biologist, Terrestrial Wildlife, the Habitat Program Manager will be responsible for implementing a comprehensive three-year project to restore habitat on Rights-of-Way in eastern Ontario and build a professional network of Rights-of-Way managers committed to restoring habitat for pollinators on Rights-of-Way.

Responsibilities include:
The Habitat Program Manager will implement the project under the terms of the grant. Specific duties will include –
Develop a three-year Action Plan for the establishment of an effective community of practice network.
Organize a collection of Rights-of-Way managers from municipal, county, provincial road maintenance departments, hydro-electric companies, and pipeline companies in eastern Ontario to form a network dedicated to pollinator habitat restoration;
Organize and oversee the delivery of activities to improve the practice of habitat restoration for pollinators among network members including annual workshops, training workshops, procurement policies, and resources;
Work collaboratively with planners from municipal, county, provincial planning departments to promote incorporation of specific restoration language into land use policies and official plans.
Create the Canadian Chapter of the Rights-of-Way as Habitat Working Group (ROWHWG); represent the Canadian chapter at ROWHWG meetings;
Work with members of the CWF team to finalize a fund development strategy and raise new funds to sustain the project;
Manage the CWF Restoration Ecologist and work collaboratively with network partners and CWF team members to plan and oversee successful habitat restoration;
Work collaboratively with the CWF Communications and Marketing Team to promote the project and communicate project outcomes to network members and the public;
Manage financial resources and provide annual reports for grants and other reports as required;
Perform other duties as assigned.
This will be a challenging position that will require the post holder to be fully committed to the vision and values of conservation of pollinators through restoration of Rights-of-Way. The post will suit a highly motivated individual with a proven track record of being able to work on his/her own initiative and motivate professionals to collaborate for common outcomes.

Knowledge:
An understanding of the principles and practices of vegetation management and habitat restoration;
An in-depth knowledge and experience of community organizing and the operation of networks and network approaches to organizing.

Skills:
The ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
The proven ability to recruit network members and Chair meetings.
The ability to work collectively and effectively in a team.
The ability to demonstrate good inter-personal relationship skills.
The ability to provide support and facilitation to network members
The ability to demonstrate competent administrative and fundraising skills.
The proven ability to manage a project budget and to prepare financial reports.

Basic Qualifications:
A degree in a relevant discipline.
Experience coordinating a network of professionals.
An understanding of the principles and practices of habitat restoration vegetation management, and habitat needs of pollinators.
A minimum of 3 years direct experience of working within a community organizing and/or network context.
Proven fundraising experience including successful grant-writing.
Proven experience managing finances.
Written and spoken English is essential, and the ability to communicate in French will be regarded as an asset.
Experience organizing meeting and conferences.
Experience working on an international initiative will be regarded as an asset

Conditions of Service:
Period of Employment: 3-year contract, full-time, with the possibility of renewal based on performance and fundraising.
Travel: The post will require an ability to undertake regular travel for which travel costs will be paid.
Location: Canadian Wildlife Federation Head Office, Kanata Ontario
