Food Security Coordinator – Collingwood Neighbourhood House

JOB OVERVIEW
The Food Security Coordinator is a supervisorial, management level, permanent staff position focused on community development through food justice. The Coordinator supports a team of 2-5 staff members to connect community members through food initiatives including community kitchens, food skills workshops, urban growing, and food justice events. The Food Security Coordinator is also responsible for fund development and project management and contributes to larger Community Development initiatives.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
*COVID-19: During the current COVID-19 crisis, many of our regular programs are on pause, while others persist in modified ways. During this time, the Food Security Coordinator will:
Support various emergency food provision programs (meal hampers, gift card distribution, frozen meal delivery).
Engage in ongoing communication with community members, referrals to local supports, and personal advocacy support when needed.
Come up with creative ways to continue to offer Food Justice/Food Security programming in line with health and safety guidelines (virtual, outside, video content, etc).
Support other CD department members with programming to integrate food justice with other ongoing CD initiatives.

Community Development, Capacity Building & Education — 35%
Support 10 + intercultural food, gardening, education, and community development initiatives with a focus on capacity building and food justice.
Identify and mentor volunteer leaders, support a broad range of community-led leadership opportunities including one-to-one support, co-facilitation, advisory committee, training.
Link neighbourhood-based work to systems-level work including education and advocacy for food justice (e.g. through the Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Network).
Assessing and responding to emergent community needs via town hall meetings, community feedback sessions etc.
Political organizing and advocacy within and beyond CNH including internal anti-racism work and mobilizing around local issues and various anti-poverty and food justice campaigns.
Partnerships and Outreach — 10%
Works closely with the Community Development Team, Integrated Settlement Services Team, and other CNH departments to identify opportunities for resource-sharing and internal referrals.
Seek, build, and sustain relationships with a range of stakeholders (residents, partner organizations, policymakers) to advance community food security and food justice goals.
Develop and refine communication and outreach methods to broaden community involvement and reach isolated residents (newsletter, monthly activity schedule, social media, word of mouth, telephone calls, events).
Attend regular Vancouver Neighbourhood Food Network meetings and contribute to local collective food initiatives.
Planning and Evaluation — 10%
Strategic planning, work planning, and project management for RCFJ.
Refine and implement monitoring and evaluation tools.
Apply evaluation results to improve programs.
Communicate impact of work through grant reports and external communications.
Solicit community guidance for program decision making and programming priorities.
Financial Management and Fund Development — 20%
Develop and monitor an annual operating budget.
Monitor program finances and maintain monthly financial records.
Research and identify diverse revenue sources, maintain funder relationships.
Develop creative, strategic funding proposals aligned with community priorities.
Fundraising and donation management.
Administration & Human Resources — 25%

Oversee the timely authorization of petty cash, payroll and other administrative forms.
Support staff to maintain program statistics and volunteer/participant information.
Recruit, select, and onboard volunteers, contractors, summer staff; manage any HR issues.
Participate in the CNH Kitchen Committee and CNH Annex Kitchen Committee to ensure the use of CNH kitchen spaces remains safe and effective for all programs.
Support individual staff member growth and development and team cohesiveness.
Provide regular direction and mentorship to the food security team via regular group and 1-on-1 meetings.
Other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:
Understanding of and commitment to principles of anti-oppression, decolonization and intersectionality.
Knowledge of and/or interest in local and global food insecurity issues and ability to link these issues to frontline and neighbourhood-level work.
Work experience in anti-oppression, food justice, community development, community program delivery and/or post-secondary degree in related discipline.
Self-motivated and self-directed; strong interpersonal, organizational, administrative, networking, leadership, problem solving, and communication skills.
Ability to work and manage projects independently and collaboratively.
Demonstrated record of successful financial & grant management, budgeting and fund development and/or a willingness to learn with ongoing support. Strong writing skills.
Demonstrated ability to mentor diverse participants, volunteers, and staff to grow in confidence and ability.
Experience managing staff and/or volunteer teams; skills in facilitation, conflict resolution, and dialogue.
Satisfactory Criminal Record Search.
ASSETS
Is a resident of the Renfrew-Collingwood neighbourhood, and/or familiarity with the Renfrew-Collingwood community, including knowledge of local resources and networks.
Lived experience of food insecurity, social isolation, migration, racism or other experiences of marginalization.
Practical skills such as: Food preparation, knowledge of seasonal and healthy foods, knowledge and curiosity about diverse food traditions, event planning, organic food growing and orchard management skills, meeting/workshop facilitation, program design, developing learning
opportunities and educational materials, carpentry skills, recruiting and supervising volunteers of diverse ages and abilities (especially people experiencing social/economic marginalization)
Oral and/or written proficiency in additional language(s).
Possession of: Food Safe Level 1, First aid certification, Valid BC driver’s license and access to own vehicle, web-based skills, design and layout skills.
Sense of humour; ability to reflect, think critically and creatively and act thoughtfully.

JOB DETAILS
Salary: 30 hrs/wk at $27.51–$29.82 per hour + benefits
Schedule: Schedule is flexible and may include occasional evenings and weekends
Anticipated Start Date: September 1, 2020
Location: Work from home during COVID-19 closure with occasional use of Collingwood Neighbourhood House office (5288 Joyce Street), some off-site locations (gardens, etc.)
