Executive Director – University of Victoria Students’ Society – Victoria, British Columbia

The UVSS is a values-driven not-for-profit organization – separate from UVic – that runs campus events, engages in political advocacy and representation, and provides a variety of resources for our 17,000 student members. The UVSS also runs a successful social-enterprise that includes nine unique businesses that employ approximately 200 staff. The UVSS is in search of an Executive Director who embodies and champions the Society’s mission and who is committed to advancing the interests and meeting the needs of UVic students.

JOB PURPOSE:

In accordance with the Society’s mission, vision and values, in addition to the strategic direction set up by the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the successful and engaged leadership and management of the Society, in cooperation with the General Manager.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports and is responsible to the Board of Directors through the Personnel Committee.
Provides leadership and Management of staff in General Office, Board of Directors Staff, Information Booth, Accounting, Graphics Design Department and affiliated organizations.
Assumes overall administrative responsibility for the Society’s cost centres and services.
Management of the Society’s tenants, overseeing contract negotiation and organizational issues.

Summary of Duties

Strategic planning
Collaborate with the General Manager to ensure that the social enterprise (business units) support and promote the social mission of the non-profit society
Marketing planning and Communication strategies oversight of anything related to the board and UVSS services.
Proactively avoid legal issues when possible, communicate progress and make recommendations regarding on-going legal actions
Oversee cost centres and services including: general office, information booth, Board communication staff, accounting, food bank, graphics, tenants and affiliated organizations.
Insurance and risk analysis
SUB Management Plans
Contract negotiations relating to cost centres and tenants
Human resource management and administration including: HR policy development, employee benefits and control of personnel files
Board-Staff relations, in collaboration with the General Manager
Legal, Privacy & Financial Compliance of UVSS
Develop operational and financial policies, in collaboration with the General Manager
University Relations, in collaboration with the General Manager

COMPENSATION:

$72,000-$82,000 (dependent on education and experience) plus benefits.

JOB TYPE:

This is a full-time 3- to 6- year contract position.
