Executive Director – Niagara Sustainability Initiative – Niagara Region, Ontario

Niagara Sustainability Initiative (NSI): is a not-for-profit organization that advances environmental and economic performance through the greening of local organizations in the Niagara Region. NSI is the go-to source for organizations interested in tackling sustainability. NSI promotes opportunities to develop a mindset for an environmentally and economically thriving Niagara and to integrate these values into all-future planning as our community grows.

Role: The Executive Director guides Niagara Sustainability Initiative’s strategy, leads staff and volunteers, oversees program and community resource development, supports program delivery and is Niagara Sustainability Initiative’s primary external spokesperson.

The Executive Director is accountable & reports to the Board, dedicated to ensuring the organization maximizes its collective impacts towards its mission in a sustainable fashion.

Key Responsibilities:

Community Relations & Resource Development (20%)

Speaks at community events (keynotes, panels, lectures) on a regular basis, with a focus on Niagara Region-based engagements.
Attends select events where possible.
Maintains relationships with key supporters, political representatives & community leaders.
Maintains & foster relationships with grantors, corporate funders (i.e. sponsors), and other non-value-added funding sources.
Builds the Niagara Sustainability Initiative brand with key recruitment groups.
Leads external spokesperson for all media inquiries & interviews.

Grow the Carbon Project (40%)

Develops new leads, presentations to potential members, setting strategy for organizational growth.

Carbon Project Operations (10%)

Supports Carbon Project Program Management: maintains relationships with Carbon Project members as-needed, supporting direction & evolution of service offering.
Policy Engagement: oversees activities, supports direction as needed.

New Program Development (15%)

Works with the Board, and solicits team input, to set and approve the organization’s strategic direction/plan.
Leads and oversees research on new initiatives.
Measures and reports back on org performance against strategic direction, in the areas of impact, activity and capacity.
Cultivates relationships with potential partners; directs to appropriate staff person as needed.
Approves new partnerships, with Board input when high risk.

Administration/Team Support (10%)

Ongoing 1:1s with all staff, all functional area managers and volunteers in the “Strategy & Governance” functional area.
Oversees professional development for all staff & volunteers.
Participation & direction setting in ongoing meetings for each NSI’s functional area.
Leads weekly team meetings & biweekly staff meetings.
Finance: support audit, annual budget approval.
HR: ad-hoc check-ins with volunteers, recruitment support.
Ensures there is communication across functional areas; helps to “connect the dots”.

Governance (5%)

Works with Board Chair to set agenda for quarterly Board meetings & Annual General Meeting.
Requests Board input & approval on items as defined in the organization’s governance structure.
Maintains relationships with current Board members.
Sits on Board Nominations subcommittee.
Supports all Board subcommittees.

Qualifications

Post-secondary degree in a related field.
Knowledge of leadership and requirements of not-for-profit organizations in the province of Ontario.
Highly organized with demonstrated project management skills and attention to detail.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Ability to quickly learn and adapt in a fast-paced and continually evolving environment.
Proven leadership abilities and multitasking capabilities.
Passion for community-led sustainability leadership.
