OVERVIEW
Halton Environmental Network (HEN) is in search of an Executive Director. HEN is a network of non-profit environmental groups, committees, and organizations operating in Halton Region (Burlington, Halton Hills, Milton, and Oakville). HEN shares information and resources with member environmental groups, other non-profit organizations, businesses, governments, and the public. HEN’s mission is to support and enhance the capacity of its member groups and facilitate communication, cooperation, and action.
The Executive Director is the public face of HEN and leads all aspects of HEN’s day-to-day operations. He/She reports to and works in partnership with the Board of Directors through the Chair, carries out the strategic plan approved by the HEN Board and membership, and manages paid staff and volunteers.
Accountable to the Board of Directors, HEN’s ideal candidate is a visionary who is enthusiastic about the environment, specifically in Halton Region. The Executive Director will build on HEN’s successful 10-year history in the community and should strive to ensure that HEN maintains a leadership position in the environmental field in Halton Region. The Executive Director will enhance the visibility of HEN with critical stakeholders while also making new connections and growing HEN’s network. We are looking for a self-starter and quick learner with proven leadership abilities and multitasking capabilities.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Governance
Works with Board Chair to set agenda for monthly Board meetings & Annual General Meeting
Requests Board input & approval on items as defined in the organization’s governance structure
Supports all Board subcommittees
Fundraising and Community Relations
Assists with development of and carrying out implementation of HEN’s strategic plan
Assists with development and implementation of the fundraising plan to maintain HEN’s financial viability
Develops and maintains relationships with members, funders, sponsors, and potential partners
Oversees all funded projects, ensuring that all objectives are met and reporting requirements are fulfilled
Administration
Manages and engages paid staff and volunteers, including hiring, training, and evaluation; recommending staffing and volunteer plan to the Board
Participates and sets direction in ongoing meetings for each of HEN’s functional areas
Supports audit and annual budget approval
Completes ad hoc check-ins with volunteers and provides recruitment support
Member Services
Ensures a vibrant online and public presence for HEN, in line with the strategic plan
Delivers an array of member services in line with the strategic plan
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum 2 years’ managerial experience in the non-profit sector
Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated experience in networking and maintaining relationships with members and stakeholders
Extensive experience and/or knowledge of fundraising
Strong non-profit-related project management skills
Ability to juggle competing priorities and multitask effectively
Understanding of the grant writing process
Excellent written and oral communications skills
Broad interest in the environment
Access to a reliable vehicle and ability to travel through Halton Region, as required
Strong computer skills and proficiency with MS Office Suite
