Environmental Educator and Outreach Officer – World Fisheries Trust – Victoria, BC

Job Description:
This position will be filled by a highly motivated Environmental Education and Outreach Officer, responsible for carrying out environmental education programs and public outreach that focus on local environmental stewardship, endangered and invasive species, ecosystems, watersheds, restoration activities, and First Nations cultural linkages. The successful candidate will be a team player as well as be able to work independently, maintaining consistent and professional communication with volunteers, community groups, and co-workers. Flexibility in the candidate’s schedule is necessary to reflect the dynamic nature of this position. Ability to work from home and manage time wisely is necessary for the candidate to be successful in this position. There are two positions available.

Responsibilities:
Organize and implement the Seaquaria Ocean Education program including:
Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers as required
Develop, deliver and evaluate integrated, hand-on environmental and science education programs in classrooms, online, and in the field. Programs will be geared to strengthen multidisciplinary learning;
Help build active partnerships with UVic, Camosun College, BC Museum and other NGOs;
Update and create program resources including: lesson plans, videos, activities, and worksheets;
Assist with organization and delivery of professional development workshops for teachers and volunteers;
Provide technical support for Seaquaria tank systems in schools;
Assist with specimen and water collection as required;
Maintain records;
Maintain outreach communication efforts by
Updating and maintaining Seaquaria.org with new events, information, and other resources
Participate in social media communications for World Fisheries Trust
Writing copy for monthly email newsletters.
Assist in organizing and delivering educational programs at the Gorge Waterway Nature House, for classes and the general public;
Assist in organizing and attend community events during the summer.

Qualifications Required:
Post-secondary degree in biology, environmental studies, education, communications, or related field;
An understanding of marine animal biology and ecological principles;
Experience working with youth and groups;
Experience developing and delivering educational programs;
Experience organizing volunteers an asset;
Experience with website and online communications an asset;
Experience with graphic design and illustration an asset;
Valid driver’s license (use of own car may be required on occasion);
First Aid certification, and CPR-C (may be provided);
Willingness to submit a Criminal Record Check.

Eligibility Criteria (REQUIRED BY CANADA SUMMER JOBS)
Must be between age 15-30 years old at the start of employment;
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment; and,
Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations
