The Environmental Commissioner of Ontario is an independent, impartial and non-partisan officer of the Legislative Assembly, and is governed by the terms and provisions of the Environmental Bill of Rights (EBR). As an Officer of the Assembly, the Commissioner is tasked with monitoring, and reporting on, the government’s compliance with the EBR.

Appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council for a term of five years, with the possibility of reappointment for a further term, the Environmental Commissioner plays a pivotal role as Ontario’s “environmental watchdog”, providing guidance to the ministries with respect to compliance with the requirements of the EBR.

As Environmental Commissioner of Ontario, you will:

educate the public on their role and participation in the EBR
review the processing and disposition of Applications for Reviews and Applications for Investigations by Ontario residents of environmental policies and regulations made by various ministries
monitor, and report annually to the Legislative Assembly on, environmental issues, and the government’s success in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in achieving greater energy conservation in Ontario.

combine sound judgment, a sense of fairness and strong communication, negotiation and collaboration skills with demonstrated knowledge of ecological systems and scientific procedures, and experience with environmental issues and legislation
bring a track record in developing and implementing educational programs relating to the environment, as well as providing advice and guidance regarding compliance with legislation
understand how to develop, review and implement policies and regulations
have developed the level of expertise this position requires through your years of practical experience and progressive record of accomplishments throughout your career
are an experienced senior leader with strategic planning and financial management skills, political acuity, and knowledge related to employee relations legislation and practices
possess a solid grasp of legal principles and practices relating to evidence.

Bilingualism (French and English) would be an asset.
