UINR is a natural resources management organization that works on behalf of Unama’ki Mi’kmaq communities.
UINR is in immediate need of an individual to manage our Forestry division, ensuring that all forestry management requirements are met.
Key Responsibilities:
Prepares reports on the current status of job sites, overall productivity, and everyday operations of the forestry program
Responsible for overseeing forestry operations, harvest planning, silviculture treatments, and block layout.
Supervise forestry contractors–ensuring safety and environmental concerns, as well as forest management objectives are being met
Supervise crown land silviculture operation
Prepare harvesting paperwork and payments for subcontractors
Coordinate invoices for forwarders and operators to be paid in a timely manner
Train staff in forest planning and operations
Liaison with forestry planners to ensure signed contract details are upheld
Helps re-establish forest species important to First Nations people and assist in developing programs and initiatives to ensure protection and reasonable accessibility to First Nations of these species
Responsible in assisting in the development and implementation of a Forestry Management Initiative program for Nova Scotia (Mi’kmaq Forestry Initiative)
Supervise staff (forestry technicians hired as needed for layout, etc.)
Assist with projects related to forestry work (tree planting, GPS training etc.), and other duties as required by the position
Qualifications:
Standing timber appraisal experience (timber cruising), forest product-scaling experience, silviculture prescription experience
Experience with forest harvesting operations
Experience in supervising sub-contractors
Familiarity with computers and geographic information systems
Organized, self-motivated, good interpersonal skills
Demonstrated business skills
Interested in forest ecology, biology, and wildlife biology
Several years experience in related forestry field
Educational Requirements: Undergraduate degree in Forestry
Salary Range: $54,000–$62,000, depending on qualifications and experience
