Director of Community Development / Research – Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay

Happy Valley-Goose Bay is flourishing with economic activity and growth. The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is pleased to invite applications for a Director of Community Development and Research.

The Director will provide proactive leadership, engagement and strategic direction in the areas of community development and research for the Town. S/he will serve as a primary point of contact for internal and external constituencies on matters pertaining to Council and the Town Manager. S/he also serves as a liaison to senior management teams, organizations and businesses; organizes and coordinates executive outreach and external relations efforts; and oversees special projects.

This position assumes an integral role in supporting large scale projects and files which provide business development, employment, or regional economic development opportunities, and for facilitating, supporting, and expanding opportunities for new business growth and tourism opportunities for the Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay. The Director of Community Development and Research works with various developers, investment partners, business interests, and various levels of government to support existing businesses and community groups and to attract new business initiatives.

The Director will bring a demonstrated successful track record of community development and research within a complex organization. A natural problem solver, with an attention to detail, s/he must have completed a degree in business, administration, economics, economic development, marketing, communications, or another equivalent program of studies. The successful candidate must also demonstrate a strong work ethic where specific skills, knowledge and experience in the areas of administration, strategic planning, community and economic development are required.  Proficiency in Microsoft Office is essential.

The Director of Community Development and Research will have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with staff and external stakeholders.  S/he must be able to work under pressure at times to handle a wide variety of activities and confidential matters with discretion. The successful candidate must have exceptional verbal and written communication skills and must be prepared to work in a fast paced municipal environment. Candidates must possess (and maintain) a valid driver’s license and must provide a recent certificate of conduct.
