Overall Purpose: Power To Be Adventure Therapy Society (PTB) inspires youth and families in need of support to discover their limitless abilities through nature-based programs. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Director of Advancement will lead an innovative team that actualizes PTB’s work on all aspects of organizational fundraising. The Director of Advancement should be a visionary and a strategic leader who can work effectively at the intersections of fundraising, strategic planning, and marketing and communications.
This position will be responsible for planning and directing annual and long-term comprehensive and strategic planning for fundraising, marketing and communications. These plans will include major gifts, planned giving, case for support, marketing materials, annual impact report, awareness building, performance indictors, and annual giving (direct mail, memorial giving, events, gaming and third-party fundraising) across all appeal types and donor groups to meet the organization’s annual and long-term fundraising and awareness goals.
Successful candidates will be able to engage and convene others in a process of exploration and dialogue. The Director of Advancement will need to be an interdisciplinary creative thinker who can be pioneering as well as pragmatic. They will be an open-minded, confident professional who enjoys exploring issues while also recognizing the ownership of ideas is less important than the result of the collaborative effort.
SPECIFIC JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
LEADERSHIP – The Director of Advancement:
Participates as a member of the Executive Leadership Team, which provides direction to the advancement of the vision and day-to-day operations of PTB.
Acts as the key staff link for the Advancement Committee, providing guidance, education and structure to the committee in the area of advancement. Key areas of focus include: growing a pervasive culture of philanthropy within PTB and its wider network, a proposed capital campaign and an endowment fund.
Establishes and maintains professional and productive work relationships with board members and key volunteers, providing strategic advice and support as required.
Provides leadership and support as a member the PTB Executive Leadership Team enabling the organization to achieve its full potential and employing best practices.
Collaborates with the Advancement Committee, Advisory Board, Development Team, and the Executive Director to create and a lead a fund development plan with related performance measurements, which increases revenues to support the strategic direction of the organization.
Adheres to and demonstrate leadership in all PTB policies and procedures with particular attention to fundraising, marketing and communications, privacy, financial controls and participant protection.
PEOPLE – The Director of Advancement:
Leads by example, maintaining and enhancing an organizational work culture, of respect, integrity and innovation.
Supervises and manages the Advancement Team of PTB, including staff with responsibilities for Development, Communications, and Marketing.
In consultation with the Executive Director and the Human Resources Generalist, recruits, interviews, and selects well-qualified Advancement Team staff as needed.
Leads individual scheduling, job planning, performance monitoring and career development for each member of the Advancement Team.
Models exceptional relationship management to be emulated in the Advancement Team and throughout PTB.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable employment laws.
Supports office safety and wellness practices and management in conjunction with the Human Resources Generalist and rest of the Executive Leadership Team.
FUNDRAISING – The Director of Advancement:
Develops and implements the fund development plans in collaboration with the Advancement Team and committee in accordance with ethical fundraising principles, PTB development policies, CRA standards, ethical guidelines and other related agencies that support best practice fundraising.
Develops and manages timelines for various fundraising activities to ensure strategic plans and critical fundraising processes are carried out in a timely manner.
Creates the annual giving strategy including all appeals for all donor groups. Use full range of appeal types including annual gifts, grant writing, corporate giving and sponsorship, direct mail, memorial giving, events, gaming and third party fundraising in a manner that maximizes revenue and creates lasting beneficial relationships.
Develops tools and techniques to monitor and evaluate success. Recommends new appeal types and communication strategies to attract all donor groups.
Implements and leads the major gift program in collaboration with the Executive Director. Develops and implements a plan with measurable outcomes so that through the consistent, strategic solicitation of major gift prospects PTB realizes its annual fundraising goal. Manages a portfolio of major gift prospects, developing customized strategies for donor and prospect identification, review and evaluation. Establishes and maintains professional and productive work relationships with key volunteers and external contacts, providing strategic advice and support as required.
Manages the planned giving program. Leads the continued enhancement of a sustainable, comprehensive planned giving strategy that complements the major gift program.
Ensures all donors are recognized and stewarded. Working collaboratively with Advancement Team to ensure all PTB donors, volunteers, participants and community agencies are recognized and stewarded in a timely, consistent, personalized and meaningful way.
Ensures information systems enable program success. Collaborates with the Director of Operations to maintain a donor database that tracks all appeal types, donor groupings, donor histories and prospect information in a comprehensive way that supports the success of the development program.
Monitors trends in the community or region and adapt fundraising strategies as necessary
MARKETING AND COMMUNICATIONS –The Director of Advancement:
Directs the implementation and accountability of the annual marketing and communication plan and standards as outlined by PTB policies.
Works with the Executive Director and marketing and communications staff to support the development of the annual communication plan and the production of PTB’s Annual Report.
Works with the Executive Director and Advancement team to provision the development of the case for support.
Ensures there is management of a centralized repository of communication documents that support the advancement of fundraising and awareness.
Prepares, submits and monitors the communications/marketing budget. Is accountable for achieving goals and budget projections.
Occasionally acts as a spokesperson or media contact in collaboration with the Executive Director, Director of Operations and Director of Programs.
Manages, maintains and furthers PTB’s website and social media presence, guides and approves media outreach and steps to increase PTB’s “traditional media” reach.
Supports the staff team to ensure ongoing maintenance of the PTB website, including copywriting and copyediting, ensuring timely posts of opportunities and event postings.
Manages the development of communications and marketing materials for core programs and fundraising events.
Ensures PTB brand guidelines are utilized in all communications streams.
Oversees a database of community and mainstream media contacts and interactions.
Manages all work in accordance to public relations codes of professional ethics, standards, and practices, privacy regulations and relevant law.
PROGRAMS – The Director of Advancement:
Acts as on call support where needed with particular attention to crisis communications.
Supports the Director of Programs in the development and implementation of the annual program plan.
Adheres to Participant Protection Policies and Procedures.
At a minimum, supports or observes a PTB program once per quarter.
OTHER – The Director of Advancement:
Works closely with Director of Operations in the areas of forecasting, budgeting and accountability.
Maintains a primary workspace within a PTB office.
Performs other related duties, as required.
Completes all work in accordance with professional ethics, standards, and practices, privacy regulations and relevant law.
Particular Working Conditions: In consideration of the mission we serve, it is preferred that the Director of Advancement enjoys an active, outdoor lifestyle. The position involves significant time spent at a computer/desk, occasional travel, and evening and weekend commitments. Working outside in inclement weather is required at times.
Requirements: The successful candidate will have post-secondary education in business, public administration, communications or related fields and/or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Must have experience or proven interest working with a non-profit organization. Professional certification (CFRE) or equivalent training is highly desirable. Business training including marketing, sales, financial management and event planning is an asset.
The successful candidate will have experience supervising a team at a minimum of three people for a minimum period of three years, and will have a proven track record of bringing the best out of the team they supervised. They will have superior relationship management skills and a team- orientation.
Strong written and oral communication skills are critical to ensure that the Director of Advancement will be effective in presenting PTB and its mission to its fundraising affiliates, various community agencies and the public. The Director of Advancement will be equally adept at developing relationships with new donors, community partners as well as with leaders engaged in the national conversation of adventure therapy. The position requires a commitment to professional ethics and the ability to effectively interact with executive-level clients.
Successful candidates will have strong organizational, administrative, and financial management skills. The Director of Advancement will be comfortable in a hands-on role and willing to do the essential tasks required to meet the goals of PTB.
The successful applicant will be a team player with a ready sense of humor and capacity to work in close proximity to others. They must have experience with data systems and extracting data to support solicitation and campaign activities (i.e. CRM or database). The successful applicant will be proficient working with PCs, Macs and Microsoft Office Suite.
