Conservation Planner – Fish Passage – Canadian Wildlife Federation –

JOB SUMMARY:
The Fish Passage Conservation Planner will coordinate the development of a conservation plan to establish priorities and guide a multi-million dollar fish passage remediation program in British Columbia. The planner will recruit and coordinate partners from industry, government, First Nations, academia, and other NGOs including community stewardship groups, and will be supported by a team of spatial analysts, data managers, biologists, and communications staff at CWF as well as by these partners. The planner will organize and host a series of workshops to establish prioritization criteria and identify key barriers to fish passage, ultimately creating a conservation plan for barriers to fish passage in British Columbia.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
Apply the theories and practices of conservation planning, including identifying threats, setting goals, and identifying and evaluating strategies.
Coordinate partners across sectors (including scientists, government officials, Indigenous organizations, industry and other NGOs) to ensure communication and engagement while representing CWF.
Recruit additional partners, particularly from First Nations and community stewardship groups.
Plan, host, and facilitate a series of conservation planning workshops to develop barrier prioritization criteria and processes, ultimately prioritizing barriers for remediation.
Coordinate with technical staff to ensure that science advice is considered and incorporated into conservation plans and implementation practices.
Travel to attend workshops and meet with partners as needed.
Assist with other conservation tasks or tasks from other departments as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS
Necessary
Requires minimum Bachelor’s degree with 2-5 years relevant work experience in related fields (Biology, Environmental Science or Studies, Natural Resources Management, Geography, or a relate degree).
2-5 years of relevant work experience, including leading the development of conservation plans or other similar multi-stakeholder strategic plans.
Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills, including presenting to diverse audiences.
Ability to interpret and synthesize various perspectives, arbitrate, and facilitate agreement among partners.
Excellent organizational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple work files, establish priorities, and manage time.
Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to develop effective working relationships within the organization and with partners.
Leadership skills and the ability to work both independently and on a team.
Ability to interpret and understand technical reports and science publications.
Ability to passionately represent and express CWF’s mission and values.
Experience using Microsoft Office Suite applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint and Excel or equivalent software applications.

Additional Assets
Experience implementing the Open Standards for the practice of conservation or other formal conservation planning frameworks (or applying relevant business planning frameworks to conservation planning).
Knowledge of fish passage science, aquatic ecosystem function, landscape ecology, and watershed management.
Experience working with Indigenous communities, industry, and community stewardship groups.
Experience with program administration, strategic business planning and reviewing financial reports.
Experience in the NGO sector, and knowledge of the associated opportunities and challenges.
Location: This position may be based in our Kanata, Ontario head office or in British Columbia
