The City of Surrey is looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and creative Curator of Collections with experience in collections management, preventative conservation, database systems, staff and volunteer supervision, community development and facilitating community engagement through artifact collections. Reporting to the Manager of Heritage Administration & Facilities, the Curator of Collections is a key member of the City’s Heritage leadership team.
The City’s Heritage Artifact Collections consist of approximately 40,000 objects, which are housed and exhibited primarily at the Surrey Museum and Historic Stewart Farm, and a few other civic venues. The collections play a central role in the presentation, interpretation, and understanding of the City’s past, present and future. The Curator of Collections oversees the administration of the collection and works collaboratively to support access and use for exhibits and programs. This is an excellent opportunity for a Museum or Heritage professional with demonstrated initiative, strong leadership abilities and exemplary public relations and communication skills.
The Curator of Collections:
Plans, recommends and implements approved priorities and procedures for the development and management of material culture artifact collections
Oversees, monitors and implements registration and cataloguing standards and maximizes the use of the MINISIS (M3) Collections Management software
Liaises and negotiates with donors and community groups and associations
Liaises with appropriate City departments to ensure the smooth running of facilities
Oversees facility safety, security and public operations
Undertakes research on a variety of subjects
Supports and facilitates collections access and use for exhibitions and various programming purposes
Supports public access to collections via online database, Surrey Archives and Museums Online Access (SAMOA), and through regular updates to relevant City webpages and newsletters;
Monitors related budgets and grants;
Ensures adequate collections preservation and conservation standards and care;
Oversees and monitors budget, revenues and approved expenditures
Identifies and prepares grant applications;
Supervises and assists subordinate staff, volunteers, students and interns;
The successful candidate will have:
Graduated from a recognized university or college level program in a related discipline with strong practical and theoretical experience;
3-5 years of progressively responsible experience, including facility management.
