The Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine is seeking a professional to fill the position of Community Planner in the Development Services Department. The second-largest Regional District, it provides local government services within a region of 100,000 km2 in beautiful Northwest BC. The offices are located in the City of Terrace. Terrace is the regional service centre, providing shopping, education and health services. Both the Northwest Community College and the University of Northern BC have campuses in Terrace. The Northwest Regional Airport offers direct flights to Vancouver. The Terrace area offers access to unlimited outdoor recreation opportunities such as hiking, mountain bike trails, downhill and cross-country skiing, world-class fishing, Shames Mountain Ski Resort and more. Our location makes it ideal for day-trips to the coast or for further exploring the north of the Province.
Reporting to the Manager of Planning and Development Services, this unique position provides opportunities for both long-range and short-range planning duties in a small department. The Regional District has several large-scale projects poised for the region such as official community plans, a wellhead protection program and a sewer and water master plan. This position provides the responsibility and opportunity to work on these exciting projects.
Examples of Work Performed
Provide technical assistance and information to the public via front counter inquiries, by telephone and email;
Administrate public hearings and community advisory commission meeting as requested;
Liaise with Provincial agencies in reviewing plans and industrial projects;
Heritage and healthy communities planning;
Liaise with Elected Officials and travel to Regional District communities to assist with planning matters;
Development procedures such as development variance permits, sign and building permits, re-zonings, etc.;
Preparation and administration of plans, regulatory bylaws, policies and projects as needed; and
Assisting other planning staff as appropriate.
Qualifications
University degree in planning or related field;
Member of, or eligible for, membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners;
Preferred minimum of 3 year municipal planning related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience;
Strong written and verbal communication skills;
Understanding of local and provincial planning legislation and related statutes; and
Valid Class 5 B.C. Driver’s Licence
