McElhanney Consulting Services Ltd.’s Calgary office is looking for an entry-level Community Planner to join our team.
We are a growing practice and work collaboratively with our inter-disciplinary team of Engineers, Environmental Professionals, Landscape Architects, and other related professionals to provide innovative and integrated consulting services to our municipal and private clients. Our practice is diverse and as such the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with a wide range of planning approaches including strategy, design, process approvals, and facilitation to name a few.
We are looking for a holistic thinking, motivated and passionate person to contribute to our diverse rural and urban projects – someone who will bring a critical mind to exploring new approaches and a willingness to implement them in a team environment.
Responsibilities:
Work in a team environment to deliver a diversity of planning projects and support other professional practice projects (Landscape Architecture, Recreation Planning, Environmental Consulting)
Assist with community planning, policy analysis, land use and urban design assignments
Assist with the management of land development applications including record management, client and agency liaison, and preparing development applications
Assist in developing public engagement strategies and implementing the approaches
Liaise with clients, project stakeholders, various levels of government and sub-consultants
Contribute to our growth with ideas and concepts that push our practice to a new level
Other duties as appropriate
Relevant Skills and Experience:
We are looking for a team member who is a self-starter with a combination of the following skills and experiences:
Strong creative and design skills whether they be graphic or process-oriented
Strong interpersonal and communication skills
Effective time management skills with the ability to function in a high volume, challenging environment
Excellence in creative problem solving and solution implementation
Analytical thinking and strong report writing
Entrepreneurial spirit through business development with existing and new/potential clients
Comprehensive understanding of land development processes; statutory plans, and planning theory
Requirements
Preferred candidates will have a Master’s Degree in urban planning, or related discipline, and 1-2 years’ experience in municipal planning or land development, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
Technical proficiency in GIS, Adobe Creative Suite and/or other planning related software
Eligibility for membership with the Canadian Institute of Planners
A valid driver’s license is required
