This position serves as a key member of the TNC Canada’s Boreal and Conservation programs. TNC Canada’s work in northwest Manitoba involves several projects that focus on the following strategies:
Improve resource management through large-scale conservation agreements founded on partnerships with Indigenous communities.
Support and strengthen long-term sustainable resource management by increasing Indigenous and local leadership, capacity and authority for natural resource management and entrepreneurship.
Develop innovative financial mechanism or arrangements aimed at shifting business practices towards sustainability and local benefit.
TNC Canada is comprised of 15 people networked in satellite offices across Canada and the United States. It is a ‘virtual’ team connected via team calls and twice-a-year retreats, in addition to frequent one-on-one conversations. It is unlikely that the Community Outreach Coordinator will be co-located with other program staff. Comfort working remotely, collaborating but also working independently; connecting via phone or email, and traveling to meet in person are essential to success in this position.
The Community Outreach Coordinator will also spend a significant amount of their time travelling to and meeting with remote communities in northern Manitoba.
TNC Canada works in three geographies – the Boreal forest, including a focus on Manitoba, the coast of British Columbia, and the Northwest Territories. Each of these geographies has a conservation lead who over sees application of the same strategies outlined above. The work of the Community Outreach Coordinator is intended to support all three of these strategies in Manitoba.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The Community Outreach Coordinator is a term position that advances TNC Canada’s focal strategy of strengthening Indigenous leadership and authority around natural resource management, primarily in the boreal forest of northwest Manitoba. This is a new position that will work closely with existing staff including the boreal forest ecologist, the external affairs director, and the lead for the Indigenous leadership and authority strategy. TNC Canada’s over-arching goals in the boreal landscape are: 1) to create opportunities for enhancing protection of the boreal ecosystem and key species within it; 2) strengthen the decision-making role that Indigenous communities play in resource management, including supporting the establishment of new governance structures and agreements; and 3) increasing the local economic benefit accrued by Indigenous communities from sustainable resource management.
The Community Outreach Coordinator’s role will be to advance all three of these lines of work within the Manitoba context. In particular, this position will design and develop TNC Canada’s program of strengthening Indigenous leadership and authority in Manitoba. This work focuses on initiating and developing partnerships with local Indigenous communities, particularly those in northwestern Manitoba, and is likely to focus on supporting increased capacity for land use planning, supporting the creation of community-led monitoring and stewardship programs, exploring approaches to engage emerging young leaders, and enhancing peer connections between Indigenous communities of Manitoba and other parts of Canada. Extensive travel will be required in this position.
The Community Outreach Coordinator will support advancement of TNC Canada’s cross-Canada work to strengthen Indigenous leadership and authority through support of on-the-ground Indigenous Stewardship, strengthening the articulation of Indigenous legal traditions around stewardship, community capacity building and training, and leadership development.
