Community Engagement & Outreach Specialist – Stop Trashing It Network

Job Description
The Summer Student will be mainly responsible for assisting in planning and facilitating various community events in the Halifax Regional Municipality, including monthly workshops and presentations, and write content for the blog. The position will require working with local businesses and organizations, resource acquisition, and networking. Due to COVID-19 this work will be delivered online. Working alongside the executive director, the intern will assist in planning community events, with self-directed potential, and in creating content for our social media channels. A successful candidate will be organized, with excellent time management skills, be self-directed, flexible, and highly motivated.

Duties and responsibilities of the project include:
Write a blog entry based on monthly themes (1 post monthly) and create social media content based on personal low waste experiences;
Plan (virtual) community events and activities, including workshops, tree planting and educational events;
Source sustainable resources to support workshops and activities;
Create informational education materials, like infographics, digital flyers and information booklets;
Build community partnerships with local businesses and organizations, and individuals to amplify our reach through networking opportunities.

Objectives
The goal of our project is to provide a paid experiential learning experience, that helps build both hard and soft skills needed for entering the work force after graduation. This project will include opportunities to learn about event planning, facilitation and community engagement, report writing, writing for a variety of audience and other communication skills.

Qualifications
Enrolled in, planning to return or recently graduated from post-secondary education in a related field such as sustainability, environmental science or studies, international development, planning, ect.;
Must have a strong understanding of single-use plastic impacts, climate change and sustainability;
Must have strong organizational and time management skills;
Must be highly motivated, independent, and hard-working;
Graphic design and event planning experience are considered assets;
Must be a Canadian citizen or legally entitled to work in Canada.
Preference will be given to African Nova Scotians, Indigenous peoples, People of Colour (POC), LGBTQ2S+ people, persons with disabilities, and women, and Dalhousie Students.
This position has been funded by the Dalhousie Student Union Sustainability Office Green Grant Program.
