Communications Director – Oceana Canada – Toronto, Ontario

Oceana Canada seeks a Communication Director, based in our Toronto office. This position offers an exciting opportunity to develop and lead communications for an ambitious and growing international charity dedicated to some of the most important issues facing humanity: preserving our oceans and feeding the world.

Oceana Canada, an independent charity established to restore Canadian oceans to be as rich, healthy, and abundant as they once were, is proud to be affiliated with the international family of Oceana organizations. Oceana Canada will work with civil society, academics, fishers, and government to return Canada’s formerly vibrant oceans to health. We engage in fact-based campaigns designed to preserve the bounty of the sea as a source for wild-caught fish, as well as to preserve the marine ecosystem for our and future generations.

The Communications Director for Oceana Canada is responsible for developing and supporting effective communication strategies for Oceana Canada’s campaign goals. Candidates must be dedicated to Oceana Canada’s mission, understand Oceana Canada’s campaign goals and actively support our success in achieving these goals. He or she will guide the strategy for all communications, website and public relations messages and consistently articulate Oceana Canada’s mission. The Director of Communications will ensure that Oceana Canada is viewed as a primary source, disseminator and conduit of information related to the sound laws and policies to conducive to the sustainable development of Canada’s marine resources.

Responsibilities will include the development, implementation and evaluation of the annual communications plan; the generation of online content that engages our audience and leads to measureable actions/responses; the creation of material that leads to momentum and awareness as well as tools to test the effectiveness of communications activities; and effectively engage local and international media contacts. Prior knowledge of and experience in media in Canada is required. He or she must have strong English skills, while fluency in French will be considered an asset.

Job Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or other relevant field, or equivalent experience working in a fast-paced, results-driven environment
At least five years of experience in communications, journalism, or other related fields
Superb reporting, writing, editing and verbal communication skills adaptable to a variety of audiences
Experience in leading strategy and execution across various social media platforms
Ability to synthesize complicated scientific jargon quickly and accurately for a lay audience
Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining humor and high energy
Comfortable with ambiguity and able to spot opportunities in times of change
Original thinking, the ability to think independently, and provide solutions both within the team environment and independently
Must be able to represent Oceana Canada in a professional and responsive manner.
