Food Secure Canada (FSC) is a pan-Canadian alliance of organizations and individuals working together to advance food security and food sovereignty. We are committed to three interlocking goals: zero hunger; sustainable food systems; and healthy and safe food for all. Over the last three years, we have built the Children and Food Network and the Coalition for Healthy School Food (CHSF) to advance a universal, healthy school food program in Canada. The CHSF has 28 member organizations that meet annually in person and quarterly by teleconference, in addition to having a research committee, an engagement committee and an advocacy committee as well as ad hoc working groups. The coordinator will be responsible for building, leading and supporting the Coalition’s ongoing work and will require a breadth of skills in coordination, consensus building, communications, political strategy and more. We are looking for a candidate who is passionate about school food, education, health, and / or community engagement to contribute to our dynamic team.
The successful candidate will ideally possess the following skills and qualifications:
Experience working in networks, coalitions or non-profit organizations, through program/project development and management.
Demonstrated leadership skills including the ability to build bridges, create partnerships, and achieve consensus among diverse groups, stakeholders or organizations.
Experience with community organizing, including participatory community development approaches, and building networks or coalitions.
Experience working collectively with a team, as well as the ability to work independently.
Excellent communications skills, targeted at diverse audiences.
Ease with communications technologies such as social media, 2.0 website management, databases, e-bulletins, webinar hosting, etc.
Education in a relevant field.
Bilingual, with fluent English and functional French (oral and written).
Ability to work some flexible hours and to travel occasionally.
Experience with school food programs and familiarity with existing research on school food and / or collective impact an asset.
Experience with fundraising an asset.
Responsibilities:
The CHSF has many active members who contribute to Coalition activities in diverse ways, so many of the following tasks involve the coordination of the activity with members.
Grow and support the Coalition for Healthy School Food using a Collective Impact framework, including partnership building with new members, convening and coordinating Coalition and some committee meetings.
Coordinate the development of a three-year strategy for the Coalition.
Support the development of and execute a communications strategy including: provision of information (e-bulletins, website); offering learning opportunities (i.e.: webinars); coordinating media / social media strategies; coordinating the development of reports and policy briefs.
Develop and launch National Day of Action for Healthy School Food and mobilize people and organizations across Canada.
Develop research projects in collaboration with academics and students to generate reports for diverse audiences as well as new knowledge.
Coordinate advocacy activities to advance coalition goals.
Application process:
This is a three-year full-time position with a 3-month probationary period. The coordinator will ideally be based in Montreal, however there is some flexibility.
