Job Description:
This position reports to the Director Risk & Claims. This position plays a key role within a small team of insurance professionals providing claims services to the 700 plus participants in the AMSC Insurance program. (Municipalities and related nonprofit organizations)
Our Risk & Claims staff are responsible for servicing, claims handling and risk management activities related to all products purchased or accessed by members. Claims are adjusted by an independent adjuster and examined by claims staff. Inside and outside legal counsel are utilized for litigated claims.
Purpose of the Position:
This position will:
Examine Property and Liability/ E&O and Auto Physical Damage claims within the MUNIX self-insurance reciprocal and provide authority to adjusters within the position authority limits.
Be familiar with commercial insurance wordings and exclusions for other lines such as Environmental, Crime, Boiler & Machinery, and Aviation for reporting to excess insurers.
Be very detail orientated to ensure claims are investigated thoroughly and settled fairly.
Manage the independent adjuster and legal counsel duties on the claims that this position is examining.
Ensure claimants and member clients are treated with courtesy and respect throughout the claims settlement process.
Responsibilities:
Major responsibilities of this position include:
Develop and maintain effective ongoing relationships with members, insurance and claims personnel through effective delivery of claims customer support services.
Confirm the nature, potential exposure and validity of the claim.
Choose the appropriate independent adjuster to handle the claim.
Monitor the adjustment of assigned claims and settle them within authority.
Utilize the claims software system to manage and monitor claims.
Assist in mentoring junior staff as requested.
Discuss claims issues with members as required.
Identify loss trends or unusual claims and determine ways to assist member in mitigating and managing the risks.Provide Director with recommendations for risk mitigations.
Assist with risk management training of members as it relates to claims process and handling, especially in the areas of Self Insured Retentions.
Other duties as assigned.
General:
Provides claims and risk management advice to members.
Works closely with the Director and Senior Claims Examiner.
Reports as required to the Director Risk & Claims.
Meets regularly with department colleagues to discuss claims operations, and offers ideas to improve processes and procedures as required.
Independent and reliable- Is able to work with minimal supervision. Is self-motivated and self-directed.
Develop a thorough understanding of the Municipal Government Act and the defences available for liability.
Be adaptable to learning new skill sets utilized in risk management.
Personal Specifications:
Education:
Preference will be given to a candidate with a CIP designation, or who is enrolled in courses offered through the Insurance Institute of Canada with the committed goal of obtaining CIP. Completion of a CRM designation would be considered an asset.
Proficient in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel.
Experience in an office environment using computerized information systems.

The successful incumbent will possess:
An excellent working knowledge of all lines of commercial insurance products, especially Property and Liability/ E &O.
A minimum of 3-5 years’ experience as a claims examiner.
The ability to build effective relationships with staff and members.
The ability to develop sound relationships with key partners and service providers and provide sound advice on emerging issues.
Thorough knowledge of the adjustment process and the examination process, including interpretation of coverage, investigation requirements and equitable settlements.
