Child / Youth Leader – Tsawwassen First Nation – Delta, BC

Tsawwassen First Nation has an exciting employment opportunity for a full time regular Child and Youth Leader.  This position provides a variety of responsibilities required to ensure the full implementation of all children and youth programming as it relates to Tsawwassen First Nation. Your role is to inspire children and youth by being a strong role model and by demonstrating with your actions the contribution they can make to their community. You will be responsible for assisting the child and youth Coordinator in planning, developing, and scheduling specific fitness and recreation programs, services and special events; implementing of program activities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Assist in the development and implementation of after school, professional development days, spring break and summer programming,  sports and recreational activities as well as workshops focusing on aspects of healthy living, life skills and self reliance, groups focusing on personal confidence, self esteem and enhancement of cultural identity and drug/alcohol intervention and prevention.
Maintain the Healthy habits Lunch program.
Assist in the development and implementation of fundraising events for special events and activities.
Provide one on one communication and support to children and youth as needed.
Build strong interpersonal relationships with children and youth one to one and in group setting.
Liaise with outside agencies and the community on programs relating to Tsawwassen First Nation youth.
Assist in the delivery of Language and Culture programming and events that build support for TFN Culture and Traditions.
Provide positive experiences for children and youth such as summer camping trips and age appropriate field trips.
Assist in the development and implementation of yearly community building events (Easter, Halloween and Christmas).
Assist in the development and implementation of training opportunities for youth.
Promote and enhance youth participation in conferences and work closely with the Employment Coordinator on training opportunities for youth in the community activities.
Maintain an open and on-going relationship with parents of Tsawwassen First Nation children.
Contribute to the collaborative fostering of a positive learning environment for Tsawwassen First Nation students.
Assist in maintenance and enhancement of TFN’s after school education program.

Qualifications and Conditions:

Post secondary qualification in Child and Youth Care and/or a program in child and youth Recreation at a recognized Community College, or a combination of Education and experience
Emergency First Aid Certificate and CPR Certificate
1 to 2 years related experience
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to provide tutoring to students
Knowledge of Coast Salish culture and Tsawwassen First Nation cultural practices and traditions
Valid Class 4 BC Driver’s License
Food Safe
First Aid Certificate level 1
Satisfactory Criminal Records Review

Hours of work:

Hours of work are variable; after school hours, professional development days and summer holidays. Work is performed primarily in the TFN youth centre and includes outdoor activities. The regular shift during school will be from 12:00 to 8:00pm, on professional development summer holidays, and spring breaks, hours will be from 9:00 to 5:00pm.
