Chief Librarian – City of Nelson

An exceptional career opportunity exists for a leader to assume the role of Chief Librarian of the Nelson Public Library. The Nelson Public Library has a staff of 8 full time and 7 part time employees who are responsible for dealing with the 11,000 members who borrow over 220,000 items annually. The population we serve is approximately 22,000 for the region.

The Nelson Public Library is seeking an outstanding leader who will bring a proven reputation of success within a progressive library. The incumbent should be focused on collaboration, empowerment and demonstrating excellent communication skills with both the staff and the public. We are looking for a leader who will inspire a culture of discovery, creativity and connection within the Library and in the community.

The Chief Librarian ensures that all library functions are carried out in accordance with established policies; makes recommendations and presents reports to the Board; manages staff; sets standards for collection development and programming; oversees the finances; and promotes and represents the Library in the community, regionally, provincially, nationally and to other appropriate organizations.

You will bring with you a Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science with a minimum of five years progressive leadership responsibility in a public library. In addition, you will have proven experience managing a successful client-driven organization as well as leading an organization in times of change.
