Under the direction of the Director of Community & Facility Services the Chief Facility Maintenance Operator’s primary responsibility is to oversee the maintenance of Sparwood’s recreation facilities and municipal buildings. The incumbent supervises a staff of four full time, two casual and season staff maintenance staff, scheduling, assigning and overseeing all work performed. They are proficient in ice maintenance, are the chief engineer responsible for overseeing the arena physical plant, overseeing and completing regular maintenance and custodial work, maintaining the pool filtration plant, facility H-Vac systems and works with Public Works on maintaining local parks and trails. They should have a high level of proficiency in plumbing, carpentry and basic electrical work. They are responsible for the development and maintaining of a preventive maintenance program, completing written reports, developing maintenance procedures and policies. The incumbent must be a strong leader that is able to train maintenance personnel.
PRIMARY DUTIES
Acts as the Chief Engineer, overseeing the operation and maintenance of the arena physical plant;
Responsible for HVAC preventative maintenance programs, servicing and inspections;
Oversees the operation, troubleshoots and conducts repairs, on the pool filtration plant and related equipment;
Provides leadership, mentoring and training to maintenance staff;
Schedules and directs daily, weekly, monthly and annual maintenance;
Conducts general building maintenance duties and repairs (i.e. plumbing, electrical, including changing ballasts up to 110 volts, carpentry, painting etc.);
Inspects and maintains parks, trails, playgrounds and sports fields;
Assist in the daily leisure centre custodial duties, snow removal and related duties;
Backfills for maintenance operators as needed;
Provides daily supervision of maintenance staff including the assigning of work to be performed;
Troubleshooting/problem solving and reporting of facility operational concerns as they pertain to facility interiors and building envelopes;
Utilizes and supervises contractors, ensures quality of work and budgets maintained;
Conducts administrative duties as assigned including the preparation of reports & inventories, PO’s, contracts, and policies & procedure development;
Works within designated budgets and participates in the budget process;
Provides relief for maintenance staff during times of illness, absences and vacations;
Performs other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Understands and has exceptional leadership and training skills;
Be physically fit and able to perform labor-intensive work;
Has an advanced understanding and ability to complete plumbing and carpentry work with respect to facility, arena physical plant, h-vac systems and pool filtration plant repairs;
Ability to operate, maintain and train staff on small equipment including tractors, skid steer, mowers, ice edger, ice resurfacer and snow blower;
Has a sound understanding of electrical systems and is able to complete pump and motor repairs, ballast replacements etc.;
Ability to identify and make repairs to parks and playground equipment;
Has an advanced understanding of risk management and assessment and mitigation processes.
KNOWLEDGE AND EDUCATION
Minimum five years related, progressively responsible supervisory experience and operational knowledge of recreation facility maintenance
Management Skills for Supervisors Certificate or equivalent
Arena Ice Makers Certificate
Pool Operator II
Extensive knowledge of preventative maintenance, custodial and construction activities and techniques
Extensive knowledge of the principles, functions and operations of heating, air-conditioning, ventilation, pool filtration and related systems
Experience in the use of computer application including DDC systems and energy management
Refrigeration Operator or Higher Power Engineer Certificate
Valid Class 5 Drivers License
