The Sunshine Coast Regional District is currently inviting applications for the position of Bylaw Enforcement Officer/Dog Control Officer (Full-time). Please note that this is a temporary position expected to last approximately 12 months or until the return of the incumbent. This is a dual role working both in Bylaw Enforcement and Dog Control; the rate of pay is as follows:
For hours worked as Bylaw Enforcement Officer $31.05
For hours worked as Dog Control Officer $32.30
In the role of Bylaw Enforcement Officer, this position is responsible to investigate complaints arising from Sunshine Coast Regional District bylaws and regulations, facilitate resolution to obtain compliance; and is required to prepare accurate reports and confidential records. In the role of Dog Control Officer, this position enforces the current Dog Control Bylaw within the boundaries established by Regional District Bylaws and represents the Regional District in all legal proceedings pertaining to dog control.
Candidates must have:
FORMAL EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Completion of Grade Twelve (12) or equivalent.
Completion of Bylaw Enforcement Level 1 & 2 certificates from the Justice Institute of British Columbia or equivalent institution.
Courses in safe handling of dogs/handling of dangerous dogs.
Valid BC Class 5 Driver’s licence.
Minimum of three (3) years’ related experience working in local government bylaw enforcement combined with a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply bylaws, and an understanding of the legal system and procedures involved with enforcement of bylaws pertaining to dog control.
Including a minimum of two (2) years dog control experience.
OTHER SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of, and experience with, Microsoft Office software.
Proven investigative research skills and ability to prepare written reports and correspondence.
A sound knowledge of Regional District zoning and other bylaws and their implementation in the bylaw enforcement process.
Ability to interpret and enforce regulations impartially and tactfully.
Ability to deal effectively, diplomatically and assertively with people both orally and in writing.
Basic ability to read and interpret building plans.
Problem solving and conflict resolution skills.
Understanding of the legal system and legal procedures involved with enforcement of bylaws.
Knowledge of the methods and equipment used in the care and handling of dangerous and stray dogs and a demonstrated ability to handle these dogs.
Ability to prioritize workload requirements.
Ability to meet the mobility and lifting requirements of the position.
This temporary position includes $3.01 per hour cash-in-lieu of benefits after the successful completion of a four month probationary period with the SCRD.
