The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is currently accepting applications for the new permanent, part-time position of Bylaw Enforcement Officer – Creston to provide bylaw enforcement in electoral areas A, B and C. Reporting to the Team Leader, the Bylaw Enforcement Officer is responsible for responding to bylaw violation enquiries, completing inspections and enforcing RDCK bylaws and regulations. The ideal candidate will possess the ability to diffuse difficult situations in a calm, professional manner and will be committed to promoting voluntary compliance through education and encouragement. Working from the Creston Building Office, this is a part-time opportunity working 17.5 hours per week.
REQUIRED TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE
Two years experience in enforcement of local government bylaws (or related), field investigations and court proceedings and a demonstrated ability to interpret and apply bylaws
Completion of Bylaw Enforcement Level 1 course at the Justice Institute of British Columbia (JIBC)
Completion of Bylaw Enforcement Level 2 course at JIBC, relevant college program or additional courses in law, security, bylaw enforcement, investigative skills or conflict resolution would be considered an asset
Experience working in rural populations and working alone
Valid BC Drivers License and a satisfactory Drivers Abstract
Satisfactory Criminal Record
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
A sound knowledge of local government zoning and other bylaws and their implementation as related to the bylaw enforcement process
Proven investigative skills and ability to prepare written reports and correspondence
Sound knowledge of local government bylaws and associated provincial and federal statutes
Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and to deal courteously, tactfully and diplomatically with other employees, the public and Regional Board members
