What’s involved:
Farming
This role reports directly to our Farm Manager, who is GAP (Good Agriculture Practices) certified. We grow 50 varieties of mixed organic vegetables, so tasks will be broad but include: nursery + greenhouse management, soil preparation, seeding, harvesting vegetables, washing & packing vegetables, setting up irrigation, food logistics + distribution, record keeping and tool maintenance.
Educational tours
The successful applicant will work closely with our Education Coordinator to ensure the smooth-running of our tours with local schools. They will need to be comfortable communicating with and educating small groups of children. They will therefore need to be an excellent communicator and particularly effective in engaging children.
Markets
We will be running a weekly saturday market in 2023 so farm operations will need to be planned, and harvesting carried out, around this schedule to ensure produce availability and freshness on the stall. The assistant farm manager will have a leadership role in this area.

The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to be involved with, and learn about, the following activities that take place on the farm:
Regenerative agriculture – cover cropping, nutrient cycling, minimal tillage
Conservation – fallow land, wildlife corridors, removing invasives
Pollinator corridors – we have 40 beehives on site!
Wetland rehabilitation – creating habitat for seasonal migratory birds
Horticulture – native plants, edible flowers, tree planting
Seed Saving – legumes, drying beans, drying corn, quinoa, sunflower, wheat
Chickens – we have a flock of heritage breeds
Organic food production – educational demonstration garden, greenhouse growing
Requirements:
The successful candidate will have a strong interest, and experience, in sustainable farming and, but also:
Will have leadership experience
Be an effective communicator with people of all ages
Show initiative and flexibility
Be reliable, consistent and punctual
Be able to delegate, lead and instruct tasks to a field crew of 8
Be comfortable operating and maintaining farm machinery: tractor, walk behind tractor, flame weeder, weed whacker, chainsaw etc.
Set the work pace in the field by example. Quality driven, with an eye for detail
Know how to harvest, plant, cultivate, seed, prune, wash/pack vegetables
Be physically fit, enjoy working outdoors, and like getting their hands dirty
Be comfortable bending down and kneeling for extended periods of time, and able to lift 50lbs, competent using hand tools
Be able to work as a team, resolve conflicts and provide positive feedback
Feel comfortable speaking publicly and leading volunteer/community groups
