The Office of the CIO (OCIO) comprises the IT Services (ITS) and Business Transformation Office (BTO). The unit is experiencing a period of exciting transformation and growth with the goal of improving the technology experience and service delivery to UFV’s students, faculty, and staff.
Reporting to the Manager, IT Applications, the Database Administrator I works as part of a team to ensure the operational effectiveness of the university’s central enterprise systems and databases. Members of this team maintain administrative, teaching and student-facing systems critical to business operations of the university (e.g. payroll, finance, student registration). These systems are required to be in operation 24 hours per day, 365 days of the year.
The Database Administrators are responsible for all aspects of database administration including design, planning, installation, configuration, support, security, monitoring and performance tuning of UFV’s entire portfolio of enterprise databases, which include Oracle, Microsoft SQL and MySQL databases.
Duties and responsibilities
The Database Administrator I researches, assesses and recommends the future direction of database technology at UFV, builds decision briefs for senior leadership and performs independent analysis and recommendations of new technologies. The Database Administrator I performs complex operational duties and tasks that need independent judgement to resolve often in in high- pressure situations. The Database Administrator I exhibits a high level of problem-solving ability, originality, creativity and resourcefulness when planning and implementing projects and solving optimization, performance and capacity related issues.
The Database Administrator also contributes to the implementation of back-up and recovery procedures, maintaining system documentation and logs and assisting in troubleshooting and diagnosing production problems.
Database Administration
Contributes to the design, installation, configuration, security and maintenance of enterprise databases and applications.
Working closely with IT leadership and the Applications, Servers, Systems and Storage teams, identifies technical solutions to critical UFV business needs.
Evaluates and optimizes database configuration and access, resolves database performance and capacity issues and performs database recovery and database back-ups.
Working closely with the Banner Database Administrator assists in Installing, configuring and maintaining ERP applications as required.
Monitors and maintains the integrity and security of enterprise systems
Installs new database software releases and system upgrades, and evaluates and installs database patches
Contributes to the development, implementation, administration and maintenance procedures for ensuring the security and integrity of databases.
Contributes to the development, implementation and testing of Disaster Recovery (DR) and Business Continuity Plans (BCP).
Provides guidance to other enterprise system staff as it relates to the design, development, support and administration of key information systems in the context of database connectivity, performance and security.
Problem Resolution & System Operations
Provides support to clients; identifies, researches and resolves technical issues; tracks and monitors problems and escalations to ensure timely resolution.
Monitors the status of alerts, tickets and processes to ensure timely completion of tasks and resolution of issues.
Suggests policy recommendations to senior management to improve service delivery to the clients and reduce server and database maintenance costs, and improve overall technical and team performance.
Analyzes usage patterns of databases for fraud and intrusion detection and determining optimal IT service availability.
Creates scripts/rules to automate database tasks and effectively monitor the overall health and security of databases.
Works with vendor resources to facilitate access and implement changes to vendor-managed systems.
Works cooperatively with the Change Advisory Board and Business Transformation Office teams to ensure that established processes are followed.
Professional Development
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of database systems, concepts and technology in order to improve efficiency, enhance problem-solving and spark innovation within the team.
Participates in on-campus and external committees and working groups (e.g. BCNET, CUCCIO) to help share strategies to address shared challenges.
Attends courses, seminars, conferences and vendor exhibitions in order to stay current with industry and technological advancements, learn about first-hand experiences and case studies.
Studies documentation, manuals, trade publications and electronic discussion lists to keep up-to-date with and to enhance understanding and knowledge of new procedures, software, hardware and databases.
Please note system maintenance is usually required to be performed off-hours and major issues are responded to on a 24/7 basis. This position will also perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or other relevant discipline.
Database certifications an asset:
Microsoft Certified Solutions Associate (MCSA): SQL Server
Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) or Oracle Certified Professional (OCP).
Minimum five (5) years of related experience including a minimum of two (2) years of experience in the administration of databases and other enterprise-level software applications.
Proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server management, MySQL, and Oracle DB management knowledge an asset
Expertise in Windows Operating systems.
Strong working knowledge in Linux, UNIX shell and TSQL scripting. Experience with PowerShell is desirable
Experience and understanding of web/application servers such as Microsoft IIS, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Tomcat, Apache.
Experience with database performance tuning
Knowledge of storage environments and server virtualization an asset.
Familiarity with project management methodology and processes an asset.
Demonstrated customer service skills.
Proven ability troubleshooting database performance issues.
High degree of attention to detail is required, as is the ability to understand complex technical concepts and the need to maintain broad and in-depth technical knowledge of all aspects of database servers and software.
High level of problem-solving abilities; must be able to effectively identify and resolve unusual and highly complex technical problems.
Ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities and work under pressure to meet time sensitive and mission critical deadlines in a complex environment.
Ability to take initiative and work with limited direction.
Ability to work collaboratively.
Ability to provide technical assistance and advice to peers and the user community.
