The Ignatius Jesuit Centre welcomes all and is home to the diverse resources of Loyola House Retreat & Training Centre a world renowned retreat house welcoming people of all faiths, Ignatius Farm an organic sustainable agricultural program including a CSA internship, the Ignatius Old-Growth Forest – the 500 year gift to the community restoring 95 acres, and the Orchard Park Office Centre.
We consider the Ignatius Land to be sacred and those who work the land have a vision and commitment to ecology and the environment. The Land supports a diversity of ecosystems, including deciduous and mixed forest, meadows, urban fringe, naturalized and ornamental landscapes and Class 1 & 2 agricultural land and Class 3 provincially significant wetlands.
The Land Manager is dedicated to the ongoing care of the non-agricultural landscape of approximately 400 acres and its related infrastructure including ecology, conservation and restoration.
Job Overview:
Manage restoration projects, land stewardship, special events, land tours and woodlots
Responsible for the budget, communications, permits, grants and funding for the Land
General tasks include the care of the formal grounds, lawns, trees, sidewalks and road system, trails, sacred spaces, burn piles; snow removal; maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
Primary contact with school and community groups and government agencies
Manage land staff and volunteers, responsible for recruitment
Ignatius Old-Growth Forest – liaise with staff for the ongoing management of the project
Qualifications:
Post-secondary studies in Landscape Architecture, Ecological Restoration, Land Resource Management or related fields, or a combination of relevant education, work and life experience
Skilled in the use of safety equipment and regulations
Experience with equipment and vehicles – including trucks, tractors and bush hogs
Valid Certified Chainsaw Operator and First Aid/CPR would be an asset
Valid G class drivers licence and access to a vehicle
Excellent written, verbal and computer skills
Strong inter-personal skills in order to work with volunteers, agencies, home owners
Ability to navigate to sites in the field using maps and GIS
Some carpentry skills would be seen as an asset
Physically fit and able to endure working outdoors in variable weather
Willing to work varied long hours including some weekends and holidays
