The Town of Happy Valley-Goose Bay is pleased to invite applications for a Community Constable.
The primarily role of the Community Constable is to provide policing support, public protection, and to uphold the town’s by-laws. S/he will assume responsibility for a wide array of duties and responsibilities in the broad area of policing, enforcement, community policing, and other services relating to the protection of public property, and carry out other reasonable duties as assigned by the Town Manager, or as requested to support the efforts and initiatives of the local detachment of the RCMP. It is essential that the successful candidate be trained and knowledgeable in policing and public protection, and be able to render assistance to the federal police force as requested or required.
The Community Constable will be expected to carry out patrols, issue tickets, effect arrests, coordinate education and public awareness programs at the local level aimed at Crime Prevention, assume responsibility (with other municipal staff) for the coordination of an Emergency Response Plan for the community, enforce municipal regulations and by-laws, and render assistance to the local detachment of the RCMP in all areas of policing and public protection as requested.
Candidates must have a grade twelve graduation diploma (or equivalent), and must have successfully completed the approved training program for Community Constable as offered by the RCMP, or an equivalent (or higher) approved police training program. Candidates must also qualify for appointment as a “Supernumerary Special Constable” in accordance with the provisions of the RCMP Act. Candidates must also be of legal age and must possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driver’s abstract, as well as be able to produce (and maintain) a clean Certificate of Conduct from the RCMP.
The Community Constable must possess excellent written and verbal communication skills, and must be able to communicate well with the public in carrying out all aspects of his/her responsibilities. Candidates must be able to work independently, as well as under the direct supervision of others, and must be prepared to complete reports and provide regular updates to the community government (and to the public) as may be required. The Community Constable must be a good role model within the community, and must be prepared to act in accordance with reasonable expectations and behaviours as might be expected of a police officer at all times.
