Risk and Insurance Coordinator
Regular Full-time Opportunity

The City of Coquitlam is currently seeking a permanent, full-time Risk and Insurance Coordinator to join the City’s vibrant team. The focus of the position is on managing the City’s claims, designing strategies, systems and policies to minimize losses in the City, and managing the City’s property and liability insurance requirements. This position required independence of judgment, diplomacy, persuasion and good listening skills.

Reporting to the City Solicitor as part of the Legal Division, your responsibilities will include and aren’t limited to the following:

Investigating and managing claims against the City, including liaising with claimants, preparing reports and assisting the City’s Legal Division with litigation brought against the City in connection with claims;
Negotiating and settling claims with approval of the City Solicitor or his/her designate;
Providing risk management advice to City departments and liaising with various internal and external contacts;
Auditing City facilities, procedures and operations to identify areas of risk for the City and its citizens and implementing loss control strategies;
Providing regular education to City departments on loss control and prevention strategies;
Providing advice to various City departments on insurance provision wordings and alternatives where necessary;
Working with the City’s Legal Division to manage the City’s self-insurance portfolio and evaluate brokerage services;
Preparing reports on behalf of the City Solicitor on the City’s risk and insurance programs, and the City’s liability and property loss experiences;
Completing related duties as required.

The successful incumbent will possess:

Post-secondary education supplemented by courses (preferably leading to CRM or CIP certification) in risk management, dispute resolution, mediation, contract and tort law, and related disciplines;
Sound understanding of claims management and knowledge of risk and hazard assessment practices;
Knowledge and understanding of the relevant common law and statutory framework.

In addition, the desirable candidate will have:

At least five years of work experience in risk management, claims and adjusting or underwriting, preferably including some experience with government (preferably municipal) risk and claims management;
Experience in preparing comprehensive and analytical written reports for senior management;
The ability to communicate clearly, and effectively manage difficult situations in a patient, tactful and respectful manner.
